I have a 2009 jcw hardtop with 30,000 miles on it, i change the oil every 5,000 miles and i recently changed the plug's but on mpg it's never been better then 24.5. I'm i asking for to much? In the spring i plan on doing a carbon build-up clean out and getting rid of the pvc line, would this help?

 

That is horrible gas mileage...

My daily driven '10 JCW (Sept 2009 Build) averages between 35 and 38 mpg combined back roads and highway. I don't spare the horses either. I've been super impressed with the MPGs so far on mine. Just had the 40k miles service plugs and oil changed and averaging 460 range miles per tank.

I do not understand why you are getting such terrible MPGs my friend... Have you given Mini an opportunity to do any analysis and diagnostics on your car?

 

My MPG is like yours on my 'normal' driving. I've been higher when driving less aggressive.

But on every car I've ever owned, and every friend who is into cars has never really gotten the MPG that is on the sticker since those numbers are more from driving very conservative. So I don't know how people on here say they have better MPG than the sticker cause to me thats almost impossible unless you really drive conservative.

One thing I gotta say is that one man's aggressive is probably still another man's semi conservative driving. Cause there are times with passengers, I'm thinking I'm taking it easy since I have passengers, but they tell me that I'm still driving hard. And I'm like ...no way...I'm purposely taking it real easy.

And I was able to get close to 30MPG last tank, maybe 28mpg, when I tried to see if I could, but to get it, I really had to drive what I thought of as really conservative and stayed at 70mph or less on the highways, easy acceleration from a stop, and laying off the gas when I see a stoplight/stop sign coming up in a block.

When I drive my 'normal', there is no way in hell I'm getting anywhere close to 30mpg or over. The car is a 2011 and doens't burn any oil or anything. Alot of people just think they drive harder than they actually are.

 

I usually get 30-31mpg on either of our cars. We drive conservatively during commutes, but I've gotten as low as 25 and as high as 40. The 40 came from a long trip on a highway at about 73. Filled up right before. I explain it by very little variations in speed, slight declines in road, maybe a downwind. Watching the guage, the dynamic reading got up as high as 99.9, but ended on average of 40.1 before I had to fill up.

 

I have a 2013 JCW HT and average 24-25 mpg. That's 80% conservative driving.

 

I dont have a JCW but on my S... I was getting around 30mpg in the fall of last year but when winter came it went down to around 26/27 mpg. 98% of my driving is city. With the occasional highway trip (once a week).

 

2013 GP2 and I got around 25mpg during my engine break in period. Now that break in is over, I'm expecting mpg to drop a little.

I don't know how Locust is getting 38mpg. I doubt I could even get above 30mpg if my life depended on it. EPA published combined is 29mpg with 35mpg for highway only.

 

I don't buy into Locust's numbers either. I never even got anywhere near that with my old 2008 "S" which only had 173 HP. And his has 208.

 

Well, it's very possible. My 2011 JCW never got below 30 mpg, except in snowy/winter driving. Ok, I do l ow how to drive for economy, by that figure was back and forth from work, some interstate driving and some stop light driving. On the highway, interstate mostly, at 65-75 I always got in the 37 mpg range, and on vacation in Texas I had one stretch where it ran at 42mpg. I was never lower than the sticker mileage. Ok, I don't romp the hell of it at every opportunity, but also don't drive like grandma either. That has been my experiences with my former JCW. Do far, my roadster isn't living up to what my JCW did

I can't seem to get good milage out of any MINI (not that I try), the JCW is currently averaging 23.1mpg. That's better than our R53, but not as good as our previous S. Its about what I'd expect.

 

Pulling in anywhere from 32mpg to 37mpg myself but also have an hour commute one way to work with little to no "intown" driving

 

Thanx for the comments guy's,very helpful to know i'm not the only one on here with this problem. But i did do something today that i haven't done before, I actually reset the counter since i bought it. I'll update tomorrow, My finger's are crossed.

This is a loaded question and unless you take into account the fuel your using and how much ethanol content, which when at 10% and higher E85 the mpg goes down since you need more fuel for the same amount of power, just burned cleaner.
Having said that our cars get 26-30mpg average and in a trip can get over 33mpg yet we live in a very Hilly area where consistent mpg isn't reality.
Overall the Mini gets far better mpg than most any other car that delivers the Fun factor to the driver and we aren't even talking about a modded JCW which is much more fun, yet still efficient.
I have got 36mpg when doing mostly highway and not leaning on the Go pedal too much, which yielded 460 miles to a tank with a 2corn 1blinking back and forth, basically 1 left, probably could have gone a bit more yet filled up with 12.7 gal. Yet the next station was a bit more than I cared to chance. My normal tanks get high 320s to low 400's in miles cause I like the Go pedal and triple digit speeds far too much to care really. Ad compared to my last Truck anything above 25mpg is a Dam bargain to boot!!! That's 25 - 31 mpg for those who are calculating

In my 2008 MCS I am getting 20 MPG (11.7L/100KM) with mixed city/freeway driving

 

Also, actual mpg when calculated manually and accurately, is usually 1-2 mpg less than what the OBC shows under average consumption. Mileage keeper is a great free app to track this.

 

in our 2006 MCS we have gotten 46 MPG but that was on a long drive that invovled construction zones holding us to a max of 65mph. we also were able to get actual 100% gas at the station where we used to live.

now with 70-80mph on the highway and stop and go city driving all spirited with at least 10% ethanol (not by choice) we get about 24-30 depending upon how spirited we get up to speed.

 

i dont know why you call it a problem.

24 mpg is pretty good considering the fun factor and lack of real pure gas.

what octane do you use? that also plays a factor as well as the quality of gas. Ive hear shell and mobile have the best quality. at least by me and ive found my MPGs are decidely better when using their gas vs others. all 93 or better octane

 

Nowhereman, couldn't agree more than to say 24mpg for owners who drive the loud pedal as often as possible this is the great part of owning a fuel efficient Mini, which if done in a higher powered V8 or even 6cyl. Would reap much lower mpg and not the same fun factor when the road has some curves, yet the RWDs can be fun just not as efficient.

i used to have a 1998 Volvo s70. 5cyl turbo, car moved, and moved good but no matter how conservatively i drove it never got better than 19. so 24 is amazing.

 

I used to keep a record of fill up data on my old car and have continued to do the same when I got my MINI last October. It's a 2013 JCW HT. Like Greg mentioned, you're always going to get less than the OBC states. Like swok, I too reset all my data when I fill up. As you can see, to date my best and worst tanks have been 31.4 and 27.4, respectively.

 

21.6 after my catless downpipe. I'm pretty much never on 5th of 6th gear anymore.

 

I'd love to get 27 lol

 

I always use 93 octane but not from either one of those gas station's,from a Delta gas station near me.
