i checked it today and it was 27.4 so that isn't bad i guess, on the highway i'm between 70-80 and i really equally drive on both city and h/w. Also does the carbon build-up Factor into any of this?

I just got my 02 MCS a few months back. After doing some work I was able to get 28mpg. I drive hard. No idea how my wife drives it but she typically drives hard to. It's only got 70k miles on it. I was expecting slightly better since my 01 VR6 got over 30 consistently with a bigger engine.

Mine (JCW tuning kit, no heavy options, 17" wheels, summer tires, N18 engine, premium gas from chevron/shell) gets about 25 mpg from commute/weekend rides. I can easily bring it up to around 30 or above, but I use higher rev a lot because it's more fun that way.

75% highway, but it's a very busy 101 traffic with lots of stop 'n' go.

'09 JCW stock engine with JCW suspension. I am averaging 29.3 mpg over the last 10 months or so. If I shift consistently at 2000 rpm, I can get up to about 31.5 mpg. My driving is two trips a day in the city with about 6 mile round trip followed by a 60 mile mostly highway round trip. I fill up right at 400 miles on a tank.

I fill up the same way every time and I usually use Shell (always 93 octane). I fill up and reset the odometer. At the next fill up, I record the odometer and divide the miles by the fuel I just added to get the MPG for that tank.

thats your problem, best MPGs on these cars is if you keep the RPMs under 2500. at 70-80 you are up over 3000. slow down to 60-65 for a week or even 60-70 and youll see a drastic improvement

Thats true.

This is why I think that some people that say they drive hard and get really good MPG aren't driving as hard as they think they are...or 'driving hard' is completely different for different people. Cause I've gotten around the rated MPG once....maybe twice...but that was me purposely driving really conservative ( at least imho) just to see if I could get good MPG.

But otherwise, I'm around 25mpg at best on my JCW if I drive combined local and highway. And 28 at best if I drive mostly highway. Maybe if the car wasn't so much fun, pop/burbles didn't sound so cool, or the exhaust didn't sound so good to me, my MPG would be much better.

I agree, I shift at around 3500 and sometimes push 5000 on long stretches because I love hearing the engine and exhaust.

32.8mlg

I have a 2010 hardtop jcw(all stock). I drove it from Austin to Dallas yesterday after resetting the mpg meter and averaged 32.8mpg. I drove it semi-conservatively and averaged about 73mph. However when I drive regularly on combined city and highway, I averaged about 24~26mpg. No complaints. After all, it's a sports car.

After driving 5 years exclusively with the Sport Button ON, I finally turned it off last week, and my mileage has gone up dramatically. I was getting mid 20's, and now I'm getting just over 30 MPG. I used to think I needed the Sport Button on, but I've found that since I've gotten use to it off, the car is still very quick and drives great.

I can't drive without the Sport button on now. The steering wheel feels too loose to me, and I can't go without the pops and burbles! :D

I'm getting 31 combined. My single tank high was 38, involving actual real gasoline instead of E85 (I was in the deeply rural south), and moderate speeds.

We have a 02 Mini with 108k. It is driven about 60% highway and averages 32-33 mpg.

I finally managed combined 26 mpg with my 13' JCW HT. I use 91 octane w/ethanol. That tank was probably 85% city.

The ONLY way I could achieve that was NOT to use sport mode, and shift at 2,500 rpm or less. In other words, drive like grandma.

No fun. Not worth the extra mpg, for a car that wants to be driven .

OK, here are my numbers: Just took a quick trip down to Las Vegas (400mi/one way) and I got 32mpg in my 2009 fJCW. Better than my '04 MCS (R53) which was at least 7mpg less. Turbo vs. Supercharger the difference? Probably.

'07 Just-A-Cooper, manual tranny, Chevron premium (91 oct @ 10% ethanol), and I average 31-34 overall (depending on tires), and have hit 40 on a 400-mile drive in 80 degree weather with the A/C on full-time and averaging 75 MPH (all MPG calculated manually).

...and I certainly do not drive "conservatively"

In my '12 JCW clubby with basically all mods except meth injection I am currently sitting at 20.7 after about 1000 miles of driving. Take this with a grain of salt, I drive my car hard, every day, every time I drive. This is with manual transmission. If I REALLY try, I can get it to hover around 34 after a reset, but thats not why I bought this car.

Now that sounds realistic for a hard driven JCW! Motor on

I wanted to see if I could get good MPG with this tank of gas this week. So driving like 'normal' people, I hit 29 mpg with 60% local and 40% highway driving.
I haven't hit that since the first few weeks of owning the car, and normally get 24-25mpg driving my normal style.

So the cars definitely can hit rated mpg, but you just can't drive hard. Anyone who claims high mpg driving hard really doesn't know what driving hard is. I realize that even with me driving what I thought was very conservative, I was still leaving people at the line when the lights turned green.

But I can't drive like this...So un-fun. But it really makes me wonder about what people think is driving hard cause I've seen people on this forum say that they test drive a justa and an S and didn't feel a big difference. It's night and day to me.
And I would got a Justa if I wanted to have good mpg. Ill probably never get anything above 25mpg again on my JCW cause it's too much fun when driven hard.

+1
Hard driving for me is above 10 psi for most of the time on throttle. Flooring either the gas or the brake...

The first time I test drove a Cooper-S, after being used to a Justa, I didn't notice that much difference. It was faster, but it didn't seem like that much. We still got the Cooper-S to supplement the Justa. After driving both for a while, it becomes much more obvious what the difference is. So it may have something to do with what you're used to, also I notice the loss of power jumping into the Justa, more than the extra power jumping into the S (or JCW).
