Went back to the DYNO today...

I took a trip back to the DYNO today after doing some MINI maintenance and the results were very suprising. Back in late March we did a DYNO day at Swift in Norwich, CT. This is the results on a 2007 JCW MCS. It did not print out the WHP which was 174WHP. Wheel TRQ was about 198ft lbs.

I was a bit disappointed with th results so I followed some advice and intuition and got much lighter wheels and a high flow air filter. The MINI had about 38,000 mile on it and I got the following results. 188.5WPH with 204ft lbs of TRQ. Not too shabby...

After much research and almost 45,000 miles on the MINI I decided to replace my fuel filter (another story all in its self) and I performed the Seafoam intake cleaning three times over two weekends. I took another trip back to the DYNO late this afternoon and got the following results. 199.4 WHP with 212ft lbs of TRQ.

I was not expecting that the new fuel filter and Seafoam intake cleanings would give me these results!

Could it have been that big of a problem?

JCW Stage 1 Tuning Kit is rated at 189HP (up from 172HP for standard S). The JCW's MINI has a (modified) different engine than the S. The JCW's is rated at 208HP. He has (or looks to have) a MCS w/JCW Stage 1 Kit and not a JCW.

Come on now, don't the MCS and the JCW have the same engine, but with different ancelleries and tuning?

Factory JCW has 10.1:1 compression while normal MCS has 10.5 (I believe). Also the factory JCW has a K03 housing turbo with larger internals (I think its from a K04) for increased airflow. Our cars generally run 10-13 psi stock, while the factory JCW generally hits 18-20psi.

I believe the JCW's has different piston heads than the S, in addition to what you posted.

EDIT: Just did a quick search and it does have different pistons. Here is a Motor Trend article.

Yep yep! Thats where the lower compression comes from

One thing Im curious about...since the factory JCW has a lower compression has anyone considered making a headspacer for the MCS to run the JCW turbo/specs?

The reason I ask is because it seems like it would easily be possible. On my 93 VW Corrado VR6 I ran a stainless headspacer on it to lower my compression by a full point to run the big turbo I had on it. Its basically just a piece of stainless cut into the same size/shapes as the block and head area so there is the oil and coolant cavities to pass thru it, and the piston holes as well.

The JCW pistons are designed to handle the higher boost. So, better to switch the pistons.

The JCW also has a more heavy-duty clutch and transmission.

I would just do it by switching the pistons. In addition to getting lower compression, you will also have much stronger pistons...so its like a two for one deal haha

You are correct but this is a 2007 JCW MCS with a few bolt ons. I am also using the 2009 JCW exhaust which has one less catalytic converter.

Just want to get clarifying information (sorry if it seems like Im hi-jacking). Why would you take the time to switch the pistons out, out of curiosity, rather than just get a headspacer to lower the compression? Getting a headspacer would be MUCH cheaper, and much easier to do IMO.

Besides, I mean the factory JCW has stronger pistons, but people on here with the R56 and GT28 with a higher airflow than our K03 have already proven that the pistons can seemingly take a pretty good beating without any detrimental effects, as well as the transmission.

Ive been trolling around but I havent seen any threads stating that too much boost has caused an engine to blow, or a transmission strip a gear from too much torque. I guess I just cant justify why you would go thru all the work of replacing the pistons rather than what is previously mentioned. I would expect to get better pistons if I planned on running 350hp, but Im never doing that again (let alone on a 1.6L) hahah.

You also have to remember we are talking about WHP here, not BHP... Jcw's put out 200+ bhp, but probably just under 200 WHP

Also this is a Stage 1 JCW kit with a lot of modifications, not a 2009 JCW. The Stage 1 JCW kit is rated at about 191 HP.

so the front pipe only has the resonator and no cat? would be fun to swap my MC front pipe for the JCW one. pipe sizes are off i know, but wonder if the length is pretty close.
