Video file: Alta vs JCW exhaust.

I prefer Alta exhaust sound better than JCW.

Interesting, I wonder if you heard a similar run of the JCW you would feel you like the ALTA better? Did the JCW sound a little tinny to you?

I preferred the ALTA deepness, too.

tinny...yes. Shallow sounding. And the Alta tips look better to me.

WOW that ALTA sound is sweet - can't wait! And I know with the ALTA downpipe it will only be better.

I'd like to hear the JCW in a similar run. Sort of hard to compare a rev in neutral to an acceleration run. It should also be done with the same camera and processing.

I did like the Alta better in those two videos.

Interesting how the Alta exhaust tips tuck in under acceleration.

If the engine was longitudinally (sp?) mounted, the tips would twist sideways... It is a cool view indeed.

I got to hear Adam's (from Alta) car last weekend.
The PDX Mini gang were giving Howard some hard revs. The Turbo Back (cat back exhaust w/ down pipe) was very very deep sounding! The MINI sounded almost like a monster Great sound!

Ironiclly enough I was watching both of these videos today before I found this thread, and all I could think was wow, glad I didn't get the JCW kit. It might just be that car or the video quality but I think it sounds awfull. Personally I'm holding out on the Borla exhaust. I can't wait to hear that

I have the alta cat back and it's a deeper tone when reving in neutral. There used to be a video with the alta cat back in neutral. It's just an opinion and is subjective but the alta sounds and looks better otherwise I would remove the alta and get the JCW. Some people like the tinny sound better. Waiting ot hear borla and see some dyno numbers.

That JCW clip sucks bigtime. I've heard the JCW in person, reved up VERY high, and it sounds just a little louder (almost inaudibly) than a stock MCS. Same tone, same amount of raspiness, etc.

I think I have watched that Alta clip 1000 times since Maaij originally posted it up a few weeks ago. It sounds SOOOOOO good!

Mmm.. Not exactly comparing apples to apples here you know. Let's see: the Alta gets 1:19 of fame, complete with accel and deceleration with the microphone directly above the exhaust. And the JCW gets what? Oh. 0:16 of clip time at rest w/ no accel or decel taken from 3 feet away.

I can appreciate the differences, but this is far from a direct comparison.

Yep, it the two videos are not a good comparison.

And, I would like to point out, both of them rap off, which I have heard people say that the R56 does not do. =)

I thought I'd read somewhere that the non-US models still have the exhaust pops, but that could be the Crack Flakes I had for breakfast talking again.

Different video/sound recording equipment +

Different mounting position relative to the pipes +

Different situation (moving & working gears vs. just stationary revving) +

Different ECU map on the JCW (euro JCW with the back-popping burble off idel)

=inaccurate comparison IMO .

That said, I prefer the sound of the Alta after hearing (and driving) both . Then again, I'm buying the JCW... as I like the 5-year warranty coverage even more.

.

IMO if you rev the alta exhaust in neutral it will not sound tinny like that jcw exhaust does in that clip....even if you use the same mounting position and same stationary reving situation and equipment, the the alta exhaust reving in neutral will never sound like the jcw sounds stationary reving in that clip .

Alta's "3 inch diameter" is very tempting. Does anyone know the measurement on JCW exhaust pipes?

I wouldn't say you are wrong. I stand by what I said: these are completely different videos under completely different and uncontrolled circumstances and therefore unfair comparisons.

Hell, the STOCK MINI exhaust sounds different when cold vs. hot. Louder and tinny when cold compared to a quieter throaty sound when warmed up. Do you know if either car was warmed up or not? Probably unknown right, as these are just random videos pulled from YouTube? So theres even another varilable that I didn't first mention.

Again, it's just not a fair comparison.

First of all, I own neither. I am not sure if I am in the market.

I second this (as above). I do statistics for part of my living and comparisons are important. This one reminds me of some clip or fact from FOXNews. Proof that the channel continues to erode our society.

I swear that my US-spec MCS pops. Really, and I haven't had breakfast yet!

Well, a couple of coca-colas. How old were those...?

Well someone should put up a clip of the jcw that sounds better than that then....I'm not sure why someone who has the jcw would put that clip of his exhaust if he didn't think it sounded good.

+1 to that. While I agree that comparing the two videos is not 100% fair, I honestly feel that if the situation was opposite and it was the ALTA exhaust which had a too short video taken in neutral from a less then optimal distance, it'd still sound decent while that JCW exhaust IMHO sounds plain bad. Obviously what we need is more clips of the JCW; anyone?

I am biased for sure, but the JCW in that video sounds like the JCW on my GP. And honestly I can't wait to tear it off. I don't like the high pitched poppy type sound of the JCW. I will be adding a TON more sound and video clips to our site and will film something similar. You may want to also hear and see a shorter clip HERE (click on videos) In this video you can hear the deeper tones of the ALTA vs. the JCW.

Also, related to warranty the cat-back will not subject the owner to warranty issues as it is post catalytic and is covered by the ALTA warranty in substitute of the OEM.

PLEASE NOTE: This is just my opinion. I obviously like MANY JCW items as I have tons on both cars, but the exhaust just isn't one of them. The plumbing is too small (hence the blattiness) and more restictive vs the ALTA. But then again it is just MY opinion.

Thanks for the debate folks!

I crawled under my MCS today and measured the diameter of the stock exhaust pipe. It was 2" wide. That means 3" pipe's cross-section is 225% wider than stock!
