FINAL PICS: Outmotoring replacement speedo/tach faces

I'm sure that Aaron over at Outmotoring will put up a vendor announcement soon, but until then:

Available for pre-order now HERE - due to begin shipping on April 15. Available in: Charcoal Grey (pictured), White, Black, Red, Green (close to British Racing Green), Blue (a bit more nuetral than the Hyper Blue but works with the Indy Blue as well). Special patters include: Black on Grey Union Jack (can't wait to see this one installed) and Checkerboard. Price is $129.99 for both faces.

These gauges feature completely "stealthed" idiot lights that are only visible when lit, giving the faces a totally clean, minimal look that I think is the best replacement look out there. They also feature an adhesive backing peice that restores the "light seal" on the OEM faces - no light leak!

The font is quite "retro" and is very different from the OEM gauges. Note that these gauge faces have no branding or any non-essential markings of any kind - very, very clean IMHO.

For an installation How-to SEE THIS THREAD. In addition, a fellow NAM-er with a pre-'05 car will be doing a supplement for owners of older cars (the install and product pics show a 2006 cabrio, but the How-to explains how to remove the dash to access the speedo for all models). Overall installation time for first-timers is approximately 1-1.5 hours tops. Gauges fit the 2002-2006 hard top and 2005-2007 cabrio - sorry, no gauges for the 2007 hard top yet.

PHOTOS (note that 1 set includes one speedo and one tach face - boost gauge not included. Sorry - no Chrono Pack faces at the moment - stay tuned for updates):

The "ring of black dots" that is present on the OEM tach (the "idiot lights") is completely stealthed, and only show when actively lit or blinking.

Note the small "dead spot" at the top of the speedo - this is where the High Beam indicator is on European/Canadian editions and is completely normal.

This is what really sets these apart:

its nice to see that there available in other colors besides gray, i wonder what would look good with my hyper blue dash, i was thinking white, cause its close to the OEM silver face. The only thing i miss about them is that i like the way the stock dials follow the curve of the gauge, and are not all vertical. How about showing a before and after pic Imagox?

The prototype actually did that on the tach, but I guess he thought that it was easier to read with the numbers all straight up and down - after using them for a few weeks now I'd tend to agree.

I didn't take photos of my dash before I swapped the gauges, but here's a shot of me pulling off the OEM tach face from the How-to thread - note fugly black circles where the indicator lamps are - yuck!:

EDIT - I *do* have a shot of the OEM gauges (at night, anyway) - sorry for the blue light - I was trying to shoot the replacement cabin lighting and not the gauge. I plan to re-do this shot (with the blue lighting) just as soon as I vacuum my really dirty carpet - stupid freezing Ohio winters...

Just ordered my black/grey Union Jack tonight. I sure hope it is easy to install! After reading your excellent how-to ImagoX, I think I will manage, but I reserve the right to drive to Ohio for help.

I anxiously await a NAV (Chrono) set. The dual tach/speedo gauges are small and not easy to read, and would really benefit from this clean style. Any estimate for how much longer it will take?

Black gauges should be a nice match for the face of the NAV, but the charcoal already looks quite dark. Is charcoal about the darkness of the steering column and other vinyl surfaces (what MINI calls "Panther Black")?

Actually, they are quite close to the "black" parts of my dash - the gauge surrounds and the other vinyl, yeah... They're a BIT lighter, but overall in anything but bright, direct sun they are close enough to almost not matter. With my top down, however, the gray is a bit lighter - satiny, deep gray with crisp, white numerals.

As for the chrono... I can't speak for Aaron of course, but I know that almost NOBODY can cost effectively make a gauge face for the center dial - it's molded with raised projections and would cost a fortune to duplicate. The other ones I've seen were just replacements for the steering-column-mounted speedo/tach. Was that what you meant? Those twin dials are totally flat IIRC (same as the non-Chrono gauges) and so should be possible...

Stop on by! At this point, I could probably have the things on your car in about 30 minutes...

Yes, that's what I meant. The dual gauge speedo/tach on the steering column are small and difficult to read accurately (not to mention easily obscured by the steering wheel). The Outmotoring style design of the faces should be a benefit.

Irish, I have the HB dash too and am going to go with the white faces - I think the blue ones would be too much, causing the gauges to blend in with the dash. I want them to stand out! But I'd like to see a pic of the white faces first.

Cockpit specialties is making me a set of Canadian gauges special for me... as all of the "idiot" lights are different...

I do like the cleaner look of just the one measurement on there. Our Canuck gauges only have KM on the, while the stock US ones have KM and Mi.

Good job on the outmortoring gauges, any other designs planned? like check or union jack?

Which? The day shot or the night? There IS a bit of unavoidable light leak at night around the inactive redline hash marks - the Cooper S has a higher redline (6.5k as opposed to the Cooper's 5.5k). SInce the LEDs are present in the gauge but are simply not illuminated in the Cooper S there's no way to avoid this. On a standard Cooper the unused hash marks between 5.5k and 6.5k should illuminate red like the 6.5k -8k hashes do on the Cooper S.

UNLESS (POTENTIAL FIX)...

I know some people out there have Dremeled out the light dams (walls) inside the tach that seperate the unused red LEDS from the amber main LEDs, resulting in smoothly-illuminated red-line ticks... It's easy to see what to do when you have the gauge face off but hard to describe. I chose to NOT remove the light dams since I didn;t want to deal with the hassle of plastic "dust" all inside my tach housing, but I know that othershave managed to remove them with no bad consequences (as far as I know).

LOL... I guess I wasn't clear in the first post - yes, both are planned. I'm waiting for a set of black/gray UJ gauges to arrive, actually, and I'll shoot installed pics just as soon as I get them and put them in.

I can't wait to see what the checkered looks like! I'm thinking it'll look too "busy," but we shall see.

Has anyone tried painting the center gauge face for the chrono pack?

I don't know who else dremmeled out the tick marks on the Tach - I did, for a client, and then liked it so much I did it for my car too. I have a set of these on preorder (Charcoal Grey - tho I would like to see the green ones..) and plan on dremmeling out the high-beam indicator light too, to get 'full' light coverage.

I'm glad they took listen to comments about a couple things - First being the sticky stuff on the back to hold out light leaks, and secondly, my personal pet peeve, ditching the red (unlit) tick marks on the temp and fuel gagues. It makes a custom0-colored dash - like green or blue - much prettier.

I can't say a thing for OM, but they may have something for Canadian models in the works. Not 100% sure on that, of course.

Ordered a set of white and requested the text be in black to match my aftermarket guages. Aaron was was quite receptive to the idea. I can't wait to get them. With any luck all the gauges and new gague faces will be installed in by the Dragon.

Looks really good. Too bad I have the chrono pack as I want all the gauges to match. Anyone know if its possible to retrofit the center sppedo and the single tac? (standard setup)

Yeah I think the gauges look really wonderfully retro as well...MUCH better than the sort of "futuristic" OEM silver ones.
