Interior/Exterior Headlight Ring Removal
Headlight Ring Removal
Does anyone have any good reference information on removal of the headlight rings on an '05 MCS with the washer option?
I need to take my chrome ones off, and am afraid to just start prying on them.

do it slowly or you'll break the tabs that hold em on
for the washers... i personally broke mine off (on purpose) and ordered new caps from the dealer. the washer arms need to be pulled forward in order to get to the cap and they seemed a little fragile. i preferred to snap em off than to try and take them off and possibly bust my washers arms

Pop the bottom 3 tabs by gently prying near them with a small screwdriver. Take your time and try to keep the tabs intact.
Then slowly lift up on the ring from the bottom to detach the double sided tape. As it starts to come loose, slide the ring toward the top of the headlight to unhook the two larger tabs on the top of the ring.
Before reattaching, be sure and clean up the old tape, and use a good quality double-sided tape to reattach them.
Hook the top two tabs in first, then push down on the ring to engage the bottom three tabs. This part is tricky because one of the top tabs always seems to come undone.
For headlights with washers, have a helper fully extend the washer after you've loosened the ring. There is one larger tab on the curved side of the chrome piece, and 2 smaller tabs on the straight part. Pop the two tabs, then slide it off.
This is all infinitely easier if you remove the headlights to do the work, but make sure if you have washers that you put a plug over the water connector, unless you want a lap full of headlight water

I'm surprised that no one in the aftermarket has produced a set of unpainted tape on rings for the headlights. Kinda like the JCW cover for chrome grills. Something that would cover the chrome and be easily painted. Something that sells for OH… $50 - $60 unpainted.
Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean???

the standard headlight rings are $25. if you have xenon they are about $35 each, then the caps are about $10 a piece. total for standard=$50, total for xenon=$90
It may depend on the year as well...not sure, but I have an '04 MCs with Xenon. I bought one ring to replace a cracked one, it was 24.99. It came out to be 26 and some change after tax. (7% sales tax in ohio) It was just the ring, i didn't need the washer cover. This was at Midwestern MINI in Columbus, OH
