Mirror caps - how do I get them off in one piece!

Im changing the color of my chrome mirror caps... any chance you guys can help me out with how I get them off carefully? They are pretty tightly fitted on. Do I just start slipping a screwdriver under them and prying?

Thanks!!! (I'm being cheap and not forking out the 90 bucks for new blank ones!)

I remember seeing a couple threads on this. You might try a search and see what turns up. You are correct tho, they are tightly fitted and the tabs are easily broken.

The first thing you need to do, is switch on your ignition and lower the mirror as far as it will go. If you now look through the gap, you should be able to see the clips inside. Easy if you have white mirror covers, harder if they're black. Starting with the clip nearest the window, slide your screwdriver, spoon etc through the gap and under the clip. Then lever the clip up and the first part of your cover should come away. With your other hand, lift this part of the cover up so it doesn't spring down again. Continue holding the cover and lift up the middle clip. Slide your hand further under the cover to prevent both clips from springing back down. Now do the same for the third clip along, making sure you have a tight grip on the cover. You are now left with a very bare looking mirror. Might be worth giving the back a quick clean up, to remove any water and dirt, which may have found its way in there. To fit the new cover. Slide it on, bottom first, engaging the two clips, then roll cover up to engage the top three clips. Repeat the above to change the other side, remembering to hold the cover tightly at the third clip.

There are some threads about this, the process I used was to get a butterknife, start by prying the inside bottom tab and work your way out, then repeat for the top. Those tabs are tough to pry and at the same time easy to break... be careful. Having good bright sunlight helps too!

Thanks again. I searched a good bit on the mini2 how to's. I had planned on having all my interior chrome painted but I didn't realise what a pain in the butt it was to get it all off. Maybe I'll wait till a later date!

It's really not that hard. Just make sure you have a skinny screwdriver. Do exactly as the write-up says...you'll spend 5 minutes on the first one and 30 seconds on the second one.
