How do you swap-out shifter ****??...

I saw in a previous thread that listed quirky things about the Mini that the shift **** doesn't screw on. How, then, is it attached?

I caved-in and bought the JCW shift **** online last night. About $60 including shipping from England. Quite a lot of money for a little chunk of metal, but it should look pretty cool once I get it on. It looks like it comes with a hex key, but I can't seem to find a set screw anywhere on the existing shifter ****.

Thanks in advance for any installation advice...

I switched from the stock **** to a MOMO, which is also unthreaded and seats with hex screws. I ended up cutting about 1 inch off the stock shaft (easy to do...it's just plastic) because I wanted to shorten the throw (I also have a Helix SS kit) and lower the height of the ****. Then I had to remove some of the diameter of the shaft to get the **** to fit, especially that little lip below the stock ****. I did this using emory cloth in a shoe-shine motion to remove material equally from the circumference.

You can check out this thread https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...omo+shift+**** for some ideas on how it looks (unfortunately the picture I posted there isn't available anymore, but you'll get the idea from some of the others).

Good luck!

To remove stock shift ****, just pull up. Be careful not to hit yourself in the face; it is funny but mostly to other people.

Thanks much Dave and Mirth(!) I think I will leave it factory height on the stick just so I put the original ball back someday if I want.

Some come off easier than others but all you do is muscle it straight up. If you have a sunroof open it because you have a good chance of hitting it when that **** comes loose. I'm not kidding LOL

One last question...,,, What if I want to put the original back on? Is it destroyed in the removal process?

Nope... as long as you haven't done any cutting it pushes right back on. It's a good time to put a leather shift boot in too

Momo shifter?

Does this hold true for the Momo shift **** also? I am trying to take it off and have pulled to no avail - but I was worried I was not doing it right so I probably didn't use all my strength. If anyone has taken off a Momo let me know how you did it. Thanks.

Momos are attached with set screws, very small set screws, that are hidden under a screwed on collar under the ****. First unscrew the aluminum collar and let it slide down the shift lever, then locate the set screws and loosen them. The **** should then slide off pretty easily.

Mneeme is right this is a very good way to do it. Less likelyhood of hitting yourself in the face with this method. By the way, lower the hand brake before starting.

Question about JCW Carbon Fiber Shift ****

Okay, I've got a question: I went ahead and purchased one of the CARBON FIBER shift ***** from JCW (not the metal JCM ****). I've looked in the JCW catalog and there appears to be a shift boot that is available for around $45. Are they basically telling me that I'm going to have to trade out the leather skirt around my current shift **** for a new one? Also, there appears to be an E Brake Boot listed as well...do I have to get rid of that leather "skirt" as well to install the JCW carbon fiber e brake handle?

Thanks,

Chuck

Do you have exchange the shift and e-brake boots? NO! It is just for looks.
