Okay, Got to find a smaller Mirror

The center mirror in my convertible is just too large. When I make a high speed right hand turn I must lean against the drivers door to see even a bit of what is ahead on the road. This is silly since it appears to me that a mirror mounted up on the roof/windshield consol near the Airbag, top and windows buttons would give a better view over the rear roll bars while letting me see forward.

I don't have the desires or skills to fabricate such a unit but I suspect it is a simple design. I know this thread has been pursued before but are there any fresh ideas? Are there any aftermarket vendors out there who can adapt a product. It may need to include a pod in the exisiting location, but low profile, for some of the electronics (garage door, key, who knows?)

Anyone else out there interested in such a product? Anyone out there who has solved the problem?

I second the motion--any vendor who can solve the problem of mounting a smaller (pre '05 as I understand it) to my '06 coupe while retaining my garage door opener functionality will get my money.

Another solution might be just to remove the mirror and install an aesthetically acceptable plug for the hole. With that I could theoretically mount any mirror directly to the windshield at a good point. I'd still need a good solution to the garage door buttons.

Takers?

You could look into relacing your Mirror witha wink Mirror mouted higher with lower profile and solves the issue of nasty blind spots.

oh and be warned the remote locking systen is contained within the stock mirror, if that gets screwed up its going to cost big $$ to fix.

I think there is a demand

impatientI'm glad I'm not the only one. I could see a nice pod hanging and inch or so below where the current mirror goes into the overhead . . . a sort of electronic drone to house the electronics, and the mirror mounted on the rear surface of the overhead. So two items to produce.

On a hardtop, it is possible to switch a 05/06 mirror with the smaller one from 04 and earlier. See post #37 in this thread: http://www.mini2.com/forum/interior-...st2378990.html

Unfortunately I don't think this will work on the convertible, where the mounting pieces are different. With some effort, there must be a way to adapt it. Was the HomeLink remote ever available on the smaller mirror?

Im not sure how many of you guys are into the D1 drifting scene, but you guys should take a look at the interior of the car. The factory rear view mirror is removed, and replace with a much smaller one, almost a square mirror, maybe 5in wide and 3 in tall. It's mounted off centered, more on the passenger side of the windsheild. I thought about doing it just for the "cool" factor if it actually worked, but I dont see why not?

Not too sure how "cool" that is. I think that may be worse than the original problem. I have the problem with the mirror too ( I am 6'3" ) and I have to move my head all the time. Oh well.

so, does anyone have an older mirror i can switch mine with?
Thes size difference is huge. I dont mind going for the older one.
I hate having that humongous mirror taking away at least 1/3 of my visibility on track day.
I have a hardtop without all the gizmos.

It's just a custom fiberglass job....he molded the mirror to the air vent.

I called classic mini about the 04 mirror... They have to order it. It's about $50 with the NAM discount. This includes the mount, screw and mirror.

I am just trying to verify that this mirror for the 04 will work in the 05 mini. Anyone done this? I read the thread on mini2 but I dont know if they are different than the US versions?

Heck, if an '04 mirror/bracket will swap with an '05-up Homelink/autodim mirror/bracket, you have a deal.

Does anyone have the shop manual for the 05 . . . perhaps someone else for the 04? Are the same electronics in the 4 mirror as the 5. Sounds like time for schematics and someone(s) who can read them.
