Interior/Exterior Under $20 Mods
Under $20 Mods
First week with the new MINI - wondering if anyone has any cheap interior mods for convenience or whatnot. i've seen threads for the caps on the screws on the door pulls, change sorters for the cupholders, etc.
i put ties on the back of my rear seats to pull them back up when they are folded down. I know people sell these pulls as well but i like the look of the ties and for $2 at the dollar store how can you go wrong.

Not an interior mod but a bucket, sponge, soap and water is less than $20 and can make MINI's look good in pictures.
Just kidding. It's hard to keep a MINI clean this time of year.
Now to find me some Bozo ties.

Never have to stick your head forward and crane your neck to see a stoplight that is too far up to see!

Love your ties idea!
If you don't already have one, put a glove box organizer on your Christmas list. Mine cost more than 20, but I've seen one in the forums called the "glove box tidy" that looks real functional, and I think it can be had for $20 or so. Makes the glove box much more useful!

I've made some cool antenna toppers. One was a pinwheel, the other a Barbie head. Not much for convenience.
Although i like the Tie idea, only i'd make them completely useless and have them on the front of the seats just to look cool. I didn't know there were ties at the dollar store, holy cow!

i had the GB tidy delivered before i even took delivery of my MINI (still no name has struck me yet) and i do quite like it. still don't have everything organized how i want it but at least i can organize it.
does the lineinsight get in way of your forward view? i'm not huge but i am 6'1"ish so looking straight ahead i'm looking through the upper half of the windshield. not quite tall enough to look through the sunroof though so the lineinsight sounds like a good idea.

I just got the lightinsight last week and it's great. It looks huge in the pics on their website but it's actually very small, only like 7" long and 1.5" wide, and it sticks on anywhere you want with water, so it doesn't get in the way at all.
Ditto on the lightinsight--it makes a huge difference. It mounts in a few seconds and is completely out of the way when driving. When I'm first in line at a red light that I can't see without straining my back (either by looking forward or leaning back to use the sunroof), I just look through the lightinsight instead and wait for the green. I think I'll get another one for the minivan . . .
Here's a cheap mod since you already have the GloveBox Tidy.
After having my GbT for a while, I thought it would be nice to have a small tray to keep the smaller items such as tire gauge and flashlight from rolling around. I decided to try my hand at fabricating something that would fit in the lower right compartment of the GbT.
Attached are pics of what I came up with.
In a search for materials at Lowes Home Improvement, I came across a flimsy metal (aluminum, I think) 'No Trespassing' sign for the right price, $1.48 (US). This seemed like the perfect excuse to buy a rivet tool, so I picked that up as well.
I simply measured the GbT compartment and drew a pattern on the back of the sign. I then cut out the pattern with tin snips, folded and riveted. I then painted my new creation and added a padded liner to the bottom.
So far it has been every bit as useful as I had hoped.

Here are 4 quick ones:
1) Replace that RC car looking antenna with one from a Honda S2000 - works great and looks much better ($15)
2) Brake light upgrade to use both red lenses ($1.50 in parts)
3) Remove the ugly air bag stickers from the visors ($3 for bottle of goof off)
4) Logo valve stem caps ($15)

GyroJunkie,
Genius!
Free shorty antenna: remove antenna mast from car. Twist off end cap. Cut antenna mast to desired length with side cutters. Twist end cap back on. Reinstall mast.
I live in a very low signal area and this mod has has no effect on reception.
For those of you with the black plastic plug in the rear bumper where the rear fog goes, MyMINI has a $20 kit to convert to an aux back-up light. Easy install.

Ever have trouble seeing that stoplight too far above your head? Hate craning your nect forward to look upward like some silly MINI driving ostrich?
