Project Hood Scoop

Hello everyone, it’s been a few years since I’ve posted anything here. I check in now and then because NAM has a special place with me.
I wrecked my mini a few years back, I had a M7 ram air hood scoop on it that was smashed to pieces. Needless to say M7 quit making them I found out so I’ve been rocking a stock hood scoop with the M7 intercooler.

One of my friends that owns a machine shop just bought a 3D scanner and printer. He offered to make me a new hood scoop. I just got some preliminary 3D sketches back I’d thought I’d share. It has a little aggressive bite to it that I like. What do you guys think?

Sweet! Like the attitude in the front. Any plans to post the 3D file for public use?

Well I haven’t thought about sharing the file or anything like that yet. We still are working on tweaks with it then off to the printer. If people like it I don’t see why I wouldn’t share it 👍🏼

I’d like to see what a fairly large piece like that scoop looks like when 3D printed. Pieces like that are usually injection mold. So he actually has the ability to scan items? Is the printer capable of something larger than the usual 12”?

Looks like a more aggressive version of the Eventuri scoop.

yes he has the ability to print life size items. He printed a full-size woman and made a lamp out of it lol

Dfic

The next pics are for my car specifically. I have a M7 DFIC so this run will be specific to my car. We added ducting flowing direct into the intercooler so I don’t have to use nasty diverters and such

Now that’s something ya don’t see everyday lol

Use care in the mounting stud locations.
The M7 scoop that your's seems to be a very close copy of, has the stud locations out of position, which causes you to have to file the openings in the cars hood.

That really sucks to buy a $130 and some dollar piece of fiberglass that you have to ****** up the car to make it fit..! I haven't taken a file to my car yet..!
PLUS, it REALLY...doesn't fit the recessed opening very well. So now, past the scoops stud location problems, you need to play fiberglass technician to make it fit the hood correctly.
I should have set it back...but I like the shape.

Scoop

Believe me, we’ll het the fitment correct. We are running some test runs right now. Thing won’t go on my car unless it fits correctly 👍🏼

Here are some images with the progress. The scoop popped of the Bed and the printer went wild lol. It’s running again right now

Your project, your design, but...

A straight section from front to rear is MUCH better for airflow than the big radius and the smaller one at the exit. The radii may look better, but in the world of airflow, it won't work as well as straight sections.
In a VERY slow moving extrusion, the radius might work better, but we're not talking slow moving solids.
Don't believe me...check out an book on airflow...! Been there, don't that.

the placement of the DFIC I have unfortunately doesn’t allow for a 💯 direct flow of air to it. The intercooler sits off center towards the passenger side and lower than the scoop. Keep in mind, this is just our first test creation. I’m sure there will be many more after we get this first one in our hands.

I like this project!

Keep in mind that the amount of airflow through the scoop is related to the frontal area of the scoop opening, so you want the scoop to be as forward facing and open as possible.

Looking at this picture, if you have the top of the scoop pushed forward, make sure to close it off on the sides:

I fully understand. I also have an "S" (JCW) model. I know where the parts are, relative to each other.
That nice "S" curve that you have really isn't needed OR desired, as a straight line is a better flow design. It's save you print time and material too..!

Just note, at highway speeds, air will actually be deflected "away" from the intercooler by the second (interior) curve.

Your car, your time.

Thanks guys and I appreciate the input. We are going to air flow test this version and see what we are starting with. Here’s some pictures of the first

one we made that we’re doing testing on

Hi everyone!

we are currently working on the mounting method for this prototype. We’ve been talking about making replacement scoops for stock R53, R57 and possibly more. We’re working this one out for me just to see what the possibilities are. So far so good! It’s been fun to figure it all out

Congratulations. Really kickass! Can I assume that the finished product would require bodywork (Bondo) before painting or is there a different print consumable that would provide a smooth finish?

this is the first test fit, get everything right type of thing.
we’re going to rescan the finished one to test reproducibility and produce a final version. The material used can be sanded smooth then prep and paint. Mount points are being added this weekend, then hopefully final fit on Monday 😬🙂

Intense -

Have you gotten out the smoke and a fan to test your nicely done, but ill designed (read that, well directed airflow) internal curves yet ?

Just tryin to help you make a better part..!
