M7 Hood Scoop... deltas

Here's some findings that some of you will find very informative and to a certain
extent eye opening......

As we were doing research for our new hood scoop, one of the criterias were the temperature Deltas between the stock unit and the M7 scoop.

As you can see there's a substantial difference between both units, producing
denser/cooler air in to the engine ie. producing more horse power.

price: M7 scoop $199.95
We can also offer the scoop prepainted to your color of choice for $120.

According to my calculations, your efficiency with the stock intercooler scoop is 24% and with the M7 scoop it is 37%. Both of these are incredibly poor results, much worse than I have seen any of my testing.

What was your test method and where, when, and how are you taking these measurements?

It does look much nicer than the other scoop add-on out there.

By knowing ambient temp, and the conditions that existed when the runs were made, you can calculate efficiency over a range of conditions:

Exactly, Peter, what speed were you testing at? I'd suspect yours is going to get significantly more airflow at higher speeds than stock due to a little ram air effect.

Andy thank you for the vote of confidence.....

Insead of complaining first about the poor efficency, would it not be more
productive to ask how it was done first....

I meassured the temps accross the core with an IR thermometer which shows
opposite to your findings a very dramatic improvement...wouldn't you agree.

As for speeds, I drove at mixed speeds (5 mile loop) 0-90mph city/hwy.

Were you measuring the temperature of the air or the temperature of the metal? What speed and load conditions were there when you did the testing? I have never seen results that low under any load or speed conditions, hence my comment.

I don't understand that sentence.

Hmmmm... I don't think Andy said there wasn't improvement (24% stock vs. 37% w/ scoop), I think he said they were both 'poor results'. A 54% increase in efficiency sounds good to me... It sounds like Andy's beef is with a poor performing stock intercooler...

Going from 24% to 37% is a 50% increase, certainly a significant increase. I think Andy was concerned that the efficiency numbers were much lower than he's been getting, especially with the stock scoop.

So, just so I inderstand from your now-edited post, you didn't measure the temperature of the air while driving? Instead, you measured the outside temperature of the intercooler with an IR thermometer after the vehicle was already stopped, with the hood open? Is that correct?

That scoop is one of the coolest exterior mods for the MINI available. Unfortunatly for me...I cant afford to pay 320 dollars for a hood scoop. I wish it were a LOT cheaper, but M7 makes quality stuff.

Sweet looking STi scoop. Is there any way we can get this in carbon?

So the numbers show the temperature of the IC, inlet/middle/outlet? If so, what do the two numbers on either side represent vs. only one in the middle?

on another note, is it me, or in profile does it look like the 'Afrin' nose on the hood? Looks clean from the front, though!

Peter, you HAVE been holding out!!!

Is there any noticable wind noise at higher speeds? It needs to be on my car, looks kinda funny in that electric blue . Can you send me one to check out?
