Installing Gen 1 roof rack mounts with headliner removed

Hi: I have a 2004 R53 with sunroof. I will be installing the Roof Rack mounting points which require drilling holes in the roof directly above hidden captive nuts, thus requiring precise templating for location of the holes. I also need to remove my headliner for resurfacing. Once the headliner is removed will those captive nuts be visible and if so, will I be able to drill the pilot holes through them from below, thus obviating the need to template? TIA.

171 people have viewed this post but nobody has the answer! Surprising.

BJ: Thanks; very kind of you to upload the instructions, but no, they do not address my question.

No firsthand experience here, but I remember reading a thread where it was said that the bracket is kind of hidden, it was also reported that it was quite heavy and that's where I think I saw it, in an epic weight loss thread,
here:

I didn't look through the whole thread just now in an effort to precisely cite it though, so it may have been another one...

...phoobucket blur is no fun, but right click image usually gives clear view.

The car in that thread did not have a sunroof.

I think most people just use the template:

The only reference I could find in regards to how you want to do it is this:

"Unscrew the ojesus handles and sunvisor and you'll see ANOTHER set of holes on a bracket and those are the factory mounting points for the rack.

Flip the rack upside down inside the car to verify spacing and pre-punch the holes from the inside.

No need to remove headliner. Drill from inside after you've placed tape on the outside to elimanate scarring.

Thanks. Still doesn't answer my question, but the pictures are of great assistance when used with the instruction manual.
