Is there a difference between the base part of the OEM roof rack between R56 and R53? I want a roof rack since I snowboard and wouldn't mind a used one so long as it is in good condition.

 

Yes, R53 (1st Gen) and R55,56 (2nd Gen) roof racks are different and not interchangeable.

The rack is available from any dealer for about $250. You can get one from Morristown MINI on ebay for $235+ $13 shipping.

I would also give the guys at Sewell Mini a call. They have been known to give some nice discounts like 30% off list. They currently have the rack system for the R60 Countryman on sale for $172. Otherwise used rack systems show up on the NAM Marketplace for between $100-$175 depending on age and condition. Just make sure you get the Rack for the R56 2nd generation Mini.

What are the chances these guys ship? I'm in the DC area. I found on www.minipartsmass.com that they're having a killer sale right now so if worst comes to worst, I'll pick it up from there.

 

Check Craigslist and Kijiji. I got my R56 roof rack for just over $100 used.

 

They all ship! But you do realize that MiniPartsMass is in Massachusetts, right?

Sewell is in Plano TX. I've bought from both of them and also Prestige in NJ, all were fine to do business with. I would say Sewell has the best or most flexible prices but shipping can kill you.

I have relatives in Ashburn, VA. and there is a MINI dealer in Sterling VA. and there is one in Alexandrea, VA. All I can say is to call around to get the best price. You never know... worst they can say is no.
