there's a lot of overlap. The best bet is in the owner's Manual which you can easily link to on Motoring File. I have only found one option not in that book, "Auto unlocking at key-off". If you choose Autolocking at drive-off (locks doors at 10mph), this feature is a must. You'll have to ask for it, as some dealership don't know it exists and without it autolocking is a royal pain in the a$$.

The List of Programmable Options is one of BMW's most closely guarded secrets. So secret, in fact, that dealers are deliberately kept in the dark about several of the options, and MINI USA pretends not to know about some of them.

It's only by digging deep into posts on enthusiast sites like this one that you have any hope of finding out what's available.

And after you've found The List, good luck getting your dealer to program things the way you want...

Here's something that worked for me when I asked to have my 03 MCS reprogrammed to unluck upon ignition off. They wanted to charge me for the programming but I said that if I had known about that option when my sales person sold me the car, I would have asked for it back then. So, since I wasn't properly informed, I should have to pay for it now. They did it for free, and charged their new car dept. $50 in my pocket!

I did the research and called many dealerships to find the unlock feature. Finally I convinced my dealership that it could be done so they did it for me (for free).

I found this is another post here. It was a great help to me.

A while back, I was looking into the terribly annoying feature of "autolock" without the completely necessary feature of "autounlock". After a little research and much cooperation with Motor City Mini, I managed to get autolock and autounlock.

In many posts the option for autounlocking is listed. It isn't in the Owner's Manual anywhere and my dealership (MCM) hadn't every heard of it. Fortunately with the help of these threads on NAM and MINI2, I finally found a dealer who had heard of this option (East Bay MINI in San Fransisco). I decided to call the Service Manager and talk to him and he said, "Oh yeah that is definately programmable. It in the normal list on the tester." Well, I promptly called my MINI Salesman (David Green at MCM) who was very interested in finding out this option. He help me organize time with Service and they tried it out and sure enough. It is an option. Ilya, the Service Advisor, worked on it for me and printed out the list of options, which I share here with (D) being the factory defaults for US market:

Function:
Central Locking
Lock after 2 min after unlocking without opening
active(D)
not active
Automatic locking after starting off
active(D)
not active
Automatic unlocking after engine off
active
not active(D)
Selcetive central locking (first driver, then all)
active(D)
not active
Holding RC open button (rolls windows and sunroof open)
comfort opening(D)
no function
Lighting
External lights
Daytime driving Lights
active
not active(D)
Home lights (follow me home)
not active
40s(D)
90s
150s
240s
Acoustic Warnings
Fuel Warning
active
not active(D)
Displays/Language
Units
Consuption
1/100km
mpg (uk)
mpg (us)(D) (how is this different? anyone?)
km/l
Distance
km
mls(D)
Time
12h(D)
24h
Temperature
degrees C
degrees F(D)

This output was from my 04MCS US market with CAR & Key MEMORY M36.0. Naturally, these options can very from model to model so your MINI may have a different level and completely different options. What I would like to emphasize here, other than I am a obstinate SOB is that many things are possible to change that your dealership may not be informed about. Don't give up. If someone posts that something works on their MINI and your dealership (as was my case) said it can't be done, push. Find another dealer with more information. Apparently, not all MINI dealerships have the same training.

Let's educate our dealerships! Let's push for support from them! Let's help each other enjoy motoring! Let's make BMW's MINI as good as the original!

BTW I was able to get the auto unlock on key off programmed at Knauz MINI in Chicago. At first their service people said no way its not an option. I then called my MA and he said he didn't think it was possible either, but he'd check. He called me a few minutes later and said sure enough it was programmable. I took it in and my MA made the change in about 5 minutes. If I couldn't get autounlock programmed the autolock was going to be deprogrammed really quick. As a note, my MA had me meet him over at sales and he did the programming himself. They have a unit to program cars for customer deliveries. This bypasses the service department who will charge you $50 for the 5 minutes of their time it takes to program your car.

another one to add to the list...

Having the wipers go back to start position regardless of where they are when you turn the car off.

My 03 MC had this by default.. my 04 MCS did not. Getting it soon.

Strange option! Why would anyone opt NOT to have the wipers work this way?

doesn't make sense to me either...

but to each his own. Maybe those that have chromed-out wipers love to keept their wipers mid windshield when parked.. even on sunny days.

How envious I am

Had the dealership turn the Auto-unlock feature on (doors unlock when key is turned to Off position), but they could not find an option for the wipers.

I was also told that it was the key that was programmed, not the ECU, for the autounlock feature. I have not confirmed this by using the wife's key in the car yet though.

What a bunch of BS! MINI dealers will use any excuse when they can't figure something out.

Amazing.

They did program the autounlock. They said they could not program the wipers to reset on engine off.

Sorry. I misunderstood your post.

However, I think the part about needing to program the key is incorrect. You can check for yourself by trying the spare key (which I assume they didn't touch!) and see if it works any differently. It shouldn't.

Enjoy!

Meant to try it last night when the wife got home, but got busy. She has a key that was no where near the dealer when I had the autounlock turned on. I'll check tonight.

Edit:
No, it is not the key that gets programmed. The 2nd key, that never went to the dealer, also autounlocks. It is definitely the ECU. That service rep had no clue.

Thanks for confirming this and letting us know.

Makes you wonder what kind of training these folks get, if any.

Possibility.....
Any chance that the keys are programmable, and that the 2nd key was "reprogrammed" just by using it in the car? Not totally unbelievable. But I don't think that is what happened.

BMWs have "car programming" and "key programming". MINI only has "car programming".
The dealer person is just confused.
