I redid the LEDs in my headlights

So previously I had installed some LEDs in my headlights around the projector lens. (see signature below)

They weren't nearly bright enough, so thanks to oznium I got my hands on some bigger brighter LEDs and....

Old LED set up

New LED set up

These were taken with a cellphone camera

Those are factory bulbs. My camera made everything into a giant glare. I'll post some better pictures tomorrow

I suppose when it stops raining here and I can do the passenger side I can make a diy write up.

I will tell you though to start visit http://www.oznium.com/ and get yourself 16 prewired LEDs. I went with the SuperFlux 4 Chip LEDs but the 5mm ones could work also. And if you have questions you can email Phil at oznium and he is pretty good about helping you out and answering quickly if you don't know about wiring LEDs or wiring in general.

I would love to do this. How hard was the install both the first time and the second time after you redid it? You had to crack open your headlight housing and stuff, right? And what do you think the total cost of it all was? I love the "angel eye" look, but I haven't seen any good kits that light up nice and bright enough. This looks pretty great, though. Well done!

Not hard at all as long as you have basic wiring knowledge and you know how to open your headlight. I have done 2 joey mods on my own head lights as well as many other peoples MINIs so I feel like I have got opening the headlights down pretty well. The total cost of the LEDs are 2.99 a piece for 16 of them plus shipping. All the wires, mounting hardware and tools if you don't already have it. I haven't seen any kits, you're pretty much going to have to go custom with it. Thank you!

Hey, thanks for the quick reply! I'm skeptical about opening up my headlamps since I don't have a spare set, but if I can manage to get my hands on some, you can bet I'm going to go for this! How visible are they during the day? Can you see them near as well as you can see Audi/BMW lights? I just know that the "halo" headlights are all pretty dim and hard to see on our Minis. Also, any recommendations on LEDs? Just get the brightest ones I can?

I highly recommend using these http://www.oznium.com/prewired-superflux they are plenty bright during the day, 2nd as day time running lights some of those pics above are during day light. There is one huge draw back though. If you're right behind either a shinny car or a truck with chrome bumpers you will catch yourself staring at those 16 white dots staring back at you . Thanks, I'll hopefully get a DIY up this weekend, I'm headed to Way's shop Friday so while waiting on my car I'll probably write it up then.

vkash1208, I think I want something more subtle, the way you "had" it is more of what I'm looking for, I know you said the 5mm will work, is that what your old ones were or were they the 3mm's?

Also, were they the white or warm white? I'd like to best match my 8000 bulbs.

Thanks

The original set was a slight blue strip of LEDs I got from autozone they were small and dull and barely noticeable.

I've been holding out on the Joey mod for years now, but this looks so damn good I have to man up. How did you get the LEDs to stay on the projector? Glue? Did you get any pics of the inside with the LEDs on the lens?

Awesome job!

Same here on the waiting to do the Joey Mod, and yes this put me over the edge too, got my led's last week, going to try & start the mod next weekend, I ordered the surface mounts so that they wouldn't be "too" bright, I was planning on using a small amount of clear silicone on each corner of the led. (got my box of toothpicks as aplicators ready)

I really want to see what this looks like running just my park lights with this mod & my new hid fogs. Hopefully.

I pm'd vkash about his prefered method of opening the housing (since he's done a few) & he said he used the "heat gun" & "gentle prying" method, I think it sounds like the safest also, to this I'm planning to add popsicle sticks to use as spacers to help hold the lense away from the base as I work around the housing with the heat. I'll take picks as I go....ok so where's the fingers crossed smiley?

I will, HaHa, you were thinking the same thing as far as running lights weren't you.

On a side note, (don't think it's worth starting a thread) I installed the smoked laminex from Outmotoring on my tail lights:

http://www.outmotoring.com/mini-coop...ight-film.html

Over the w/e and incase anybody is wondering the loss of light at night time is VERY minimal, I like it alot.
