Yes, they can be taken off. FWIW, I had them taken off my JCW at the dealer when I purchased mine. It was a very quick job, and you would never know that they ever there. You can always put new ones on, or switch to a different style/color if you ever change your mind.

Yes they can. I bought my 03 in 06 and asked the dealer to remove the stripes as I did not like the pattern. They were off the same afternoon with no discoloration or difference in the paint.

A heat gun can be used to help remove them, but not necessary. The OEM stripes are usually a little thicker of a vinyl, so it just seems like they're not removae to some people. Once you get a corner of the vinyl lifted, just steadily pull on them. After they are removed, wash and claybar the hood, then wax it. Then you are golden. There could be a possibility that there could be some indication that the stripes were there. When I removed the stripes off my 2003 Solid Gold Cooper in 2006, there was a faint indication, but nothing too bad.

Works best if the bonnet is warm.

Maybe park it in the sun for while before hand or use a hair dryer. Otherwise it tends to come off in little pieces at a time.

I took mine off with the help of a fellow Motorer (JeffC)... hairdryer and a little encouragement took them off.... and then I put new stripes right back on AND on the boot.
