There are a couple of smaller, heavy metal types .... the jewel, the cream-of-the-crop is from Doug Whalen and you can search for threads about it or just look here :
http://www.whalenshiftmachine.com/home.htm

... a second is from UUC and Randy has it at Webb Motorsports (a NAM sponsor) - you can see it here : http://www.webbmotorsports.com/interior.php

Excellent links. I have same problem. My other car (old saab backup) has a shifter **** that is a better fit for my small hand (for a guy). The stock MCS **** is huge.

I didn't like my MCS shift **** either ... but it does make a nice paper weight on the desk! I picked up a shift know from Mini Mania ... it's solid brass and then chromed ... no markings at all, just a nice smooth ball to gently persuade from gear to gear ... ahem ...

You can find it at:
MINIMANIA

Love mine!

Cheers

Geoff

dandp- is your UUC shorter than the factory shift ****? meaning a shorter throw?

i wanna keep this car as stock as possible but the 4-5 shift is
pretty tough with the huge factory shift **** and the loooong throw.
i do not want to get a short throw because on this car, i wanna kickass
without mods as much as possible and rely on my driving ability.

UUC is a little taller than stock, but very heavy. I find the shifting better from 2-3, 4-5 seems a bit long, but I can't remember what stock was like

So what's so hot about the Whalen shift ****? I see so much good stuff written about it but nothing specific as to why it's better than stock or better than other aftermarket.

Changing the shift **** for a shorter throw and making the actual **** are two different modifications. The **** itself should just pull off if you pull up hard enough (just watch your face... it will hurt if you hit it) The new **** would just slide back on. I've heard lots of good things about the Whalen *****. I haven't replaced my shift **** yet (lots of other mods in line ahead of that) but it should be really easy to do. Search around, you should be able to find one.

Another option, if you want it to remain stock is to try different grips. Try making your hand into an L shape. When going into 2, 4 or 6 (or R if you have a 5-speed) pull with your fingers while your hand is an L-shape. when going into 1, 3, 5 push with the palm of your hand. This allows you to not grip the shifter. It may help or it may not help but it's worth a shot if you like the stock shifter.

>>So what's so hot about the Whalen shift ****? ...

Why is a diamond better than glass? .... seriously though, the Whalen has a smaller diameter than stock (subjectively better) and weighs more than stock (again a subjective thing but seems to allow for more positive shifting: it goes where you push it). The attachment of the Whalen is also subjectively better: it locks into place instead of just snapping on; as i've posted before, for a machinery junky, this heavy-metal stuff can't be beat ...

I have big hands, so the stock shift **** fits me just fine. I would like to find a heavier **** in the same size. The Whalen ***** are works of art, but how much smaller are they than stock? Anyone? Bueller?

Ok guys, after viewing this thread, I'm almost convinced to get a Whalen. $130 bucks for a shift ****? Is it really worth it? A few more testimonials and i'll be pushed over the edge. Then the decision becomes brushed or polished. Anyone out there who didn't like the Whalen?

You'll love it, OmToast .... one doesn't expect something as seemingly insignificant as a shift **** to change their whole Motoring experience, but the Whalen **** "transforms" the shifting process ...

On all my old BMC cars, the first thing i'd do was change to an AMCO solid walnut **** - it was an inexpensive, quick way of making it MY car with a better interior; the Whalen ain't cheap, but it absolutely makes the car more yours.
