New Hella 500 Driving Lights!

Deciding whether I want to keep on the bottom or move up top, i think they are out of place being so big on the top grill.

I have smoked lamin-x coming, so they dont stick out as much as they do now, since I have my joey mod.

A bit ghetto of a mounting bracket for now, until I find a better solution / decide where I want to mount them permanantly.
Switch mounted inside behind shiftwell.
Enjoy! CC welcome

Installed with relay / and swtich. Constant power from fuse box #30

Ran wires over passenger footwell and behind footwell vent. Cleaned up and hidden after this photo of course.

Remove two screws from the two cup holders, and pull up the center console to feed wires through to the shift well. Pull up shifter to work with the area:

Switch installed. A bit messy of a hole, need to clean it up.

Cleaned up the car today..

Recently painted emblem black..

**** shot

Lights on

Dope! I love the low mounting position combined with the lines of the JCW fascia

Btw, what kind/size front windshield wipers are on your mini? They look like Bosch but im not too sure which model

Very nice install! Would you like to do a writeup on wiring and stuff?? Everytime I see people post about installing these, they never include pics under the bonnet. Or is it just that easy...

if you look at this pic

i just got an L bracket as you can see, then two big 'fender washers', you can see it in black (i sprayed it black to blend in more).. 2 neoprene washers(75 cents each) to protect the fender washer against the grill on each side, then a 1.5"x 1/4" bolt and a 1/4" nut- bolt (From behind grill), goes into a fender washer, then neoprene washer, thru grill, then to another neoprene washer, then to a fender washer, then nut. buy twice of all that and do the same to the other side.
on the lower grill its not the most stable for lighting while driving, as it vibrates a little bit up and down, but the upper grill is much stronger. If you put a vertical support on the back of the grill it may help too... something i'll get to once i get a more permanant mounting idea...

hope that helps! let me kno if you have any questions.

wiring isnt too bad, if you get the hella 500 Driving light set (40$ from amazon) it comes with everythign you need, and the diagram supplied is very straight forward and follows to a tee.

passenger side is longer.

the cheaper bosch ones suck, they were done after a mild winter (when i put them on half way thru winter)

How did you get them mounted to the lower grill. I'm assuming you pulled it off. I just mounted a set on my upper grill and that was easy. But just couldn't figured out how you get the bracket mounted to the grill.

finally someone put the lights where they belong. not like all the other people who put them on the top grill because its more practical even tho it looks retarded. good job now ive seen how it looks and i can do mine.

Sounds like fun but i do agree having them on the top grill looks a little off. They are just so big.

BostonR6s,

I was just wondering if there are any updates. Do you still have them on the lower grill? How are they doing on the stable front? Any other tips that you might suggest for the install? Just wondering, I think that they look great on the lower grill and I am going to try and put mine on this weekend. They look great on your car by the way! Thank for posting and for the help!

Justin

yup, they're still on the lower grill, they are stable, but they definitely have a little vibration to them when you hit bumps at night, but then again, i'm lowered so its definitely worse because of it haha.

pm me if you have any specific questions on the install, its pretty straight forward, but incase you do lemme know! thanks for the compliments

The idea is good having them down there. They just seem a tad too large for me?....also since you've joey'd they look kind of out of place. I'd recommend the hella black magic lamps if they weren't so $$$ and large

Black Magic Lamps (7-3/8"Dia. x 8-7/16"H x 3-7/16"D)

Just my opinion but a great job nonetheless!

does anyone know of how to do this mod by splicing into the stock fog light switch so that all 4 lower lights can be activated by 1 switch?

Instead of wiring to the high beams wire it to the fogs down low.

it looks like the OP wired it to a separate switch that he installed. Can I just use splices to tap into the wiring for the fog lights?

I would tap that wiring from the fog lights to a relay that way you are using power from the battery to run them. The tap on the fog lights would only activate the driving lights (not power them)

I'd love to put some driving lights down there but just not that big. Any suggestions? I am considering the Hella Optilux 2500 Angel Eye Lights as they are 4" round but am still doing some research.

I will tell you the more I look at driving lights the more I'm thinking of this look:

maybe a couple of black magics on the far sides of the grill?
