DIY clear front turn signal lenses

EDIT: My original mold got damaged and I haven't had the chance to make another one, so not able to make lenses yet.

So after reading a couple of threads about Joey mods and removing the egg yolk look I got to thinking about my turn signal lenses. I removed my orange lenses and painted some amber bulbs, also got some Silverstars. But the lack of a lens was bugging me. So I thought "Why not make some?"

Still working out the details of casting. But I got the mold made and cast a couple of pieces. I'll take some pictures when I get them installed in my car.

Orange vs. Clear

First attempt on left

Some imperfections in the second cast, after I cut the flashing off.

My test ice lens (don't think it'll last in the AZ heat)

My mold.

Latest attempt, a lot less imperfections.

The orange lenses right? Oh yeah. You can do it with the headlights still on the car but I found it easier just to take them off. The chrome reflector is held on by 4 T10 torx screws. The assembly that holds the bulb is screwed to the reflector with 2 T20 torx screws. It is easier to get to the last 2 small screws if you take off the bulb assy. first. Then the lens just snaps into the reflector.

I've been driving around with no turn signal lenses for about a week.

I'll take pics when I put my homemade clear lenses in the car.

yes... that big orange thing that sticks out like a sore thumb.

i removed that and got silvervisions but the only problem was that cuz it was a UK spec, the pins didnt match up. some other namer said he just dremeled one of the pins down and it fit alright. i had to do the same but with a nail file that came with my pocketknife.

it does shine bright orange but towards the base of the bulb, there is more orange than silver. at a distance (5-6 feet) you cant tell, but up close, you can still see some orange if you are looking for it

edit: i cant see the pictures chubbycheckers!

I'm on the road right now. I'll check them when I get home. I'm going to install my clear ones and take pics.

you can def. access (just?) the bulb without opening your headlights. there is a huuge hole on the inside of the wheel arch, just unscrew that and reach in!

i took my lense off doing the joey mod.

there is a reason why we switched to silver vision and that is because if you just remove the amber lense and left the OEM bulb, it WILL NOT flash the legal amber color required by law. so it is highly recomended that you purchase a different bulb (ex. silvervision) b4 you remove the lenses

How/what did you use to cast the mold?
I have an idea for making something, but I have no clue what kind of material I could use to make a cast and then what I could do to fill it so its a plastic product. I need material that could be done at home with basic at home tools (oven, etc)

Thank you

Here is a PDF of how I took my lens out. Since I have xenons I'm not sure if the lens is the same. It looks like it in some of the pics I've seen.

An amber bulb painted silver with no lens.

Well, I'm still working out the process, but I would consider $40/pair, shipping included.

Actually, under California Vehicle Code (and most likely, most states and DOT regulation), the front turn signal can be either amber or white.

Have you taken out your lenses? Do you have any pics that we can compare the lenses?

Well the Halogens are different. The lense will not come out from the back. The part where the lense clips in is molded into the projector for the headlamp and will not come out. Here is a pic from the inside.

However from looking at the lenses above it does look like the same lense. It is held in with 2 clips. Also just from a rough measurement they look like they are around 2 5/8" diameter.

Looks like the only way to take it out is to remove the headlight lens then unclip and remove from the front. I am planning on doing the joey mod so I can take it out then.

So chubby I will be your guinea pig on the halogens if you like. If possible when you get a set of the clear lenses the way you like them I would like to buy a set and if they don't work I could send them back for a refund.

So close. I'm bummed. I'm hesitant to open up the headlight housing much more, but I got a feeling when I see the fruits of your labor, I won't be able to resist.
