I would like to paint my tach and speedo rings and touch up some damage to my down tubes. has anyone matched the interior anthracite color? I think I found a touch up paint for anthracite black at amazon, strangely enough, but i am sure that is an exterior paint that will not match. Any ideas?
Good luck trying to find a match. Pretty much all that I have found are too brown/yellow, the anthracite color has a lot of blue in it. P.S., the color of the cap is a bit misleading also, they have more blue in them than what they turn out.
oh, also, I looked up the Montana paint collection, and you may want to be careful about the style of paint that you buy; The Anthracite color that you are looking at looks like it might be a non-metallic color, meaning you won't see a sparkle, like the downtubes have.
If anybody can suggest a spraypaint I would be forever grateful. So far I have tried:
SEM - Charcoal Metallic (Blue-est dark grey I could find) (too brown/yellow)
Duplicolor Engine Enamel - Dark grey color (too brown/yellow)
Duplicolor Auto Spray - Charcoal Metallic (too brown/yellow)
Rust-Oleum - Black Night Metallic (too black)
Please anybody, if you have found a different color/company that is a great match, let us know. I would rather have an anthracite Tach Ring than a matte black one.

According to this, Plastikote 1006 Dark Grey M is a good match, but I haven't been able to find Plastikote anywhere in the SF Bay Area, and their website is useless.
i tried them all . called them all, went to all of stores. trust me ; see my earlier post. spent days & days untill i found the right place to get the proper spray paint.

Do you know what the product was? I went to their website (http://minspeed.net) but could only find exterior colors. Were you using the Dark Silver Spray color or the tech grey, or is it something that I actually have to contact and ask them about? Thanks!

Hi. I ordered my car with the anthracite interior and got alloy patina instead, which is my least favorite. I had to have someone pick up the car for me, and the saleslady convinced him, when he noticed it, that patina was anthracite. Not cool, eh?
Anyway, I need some pictures of cars with total factory anthracite interior. I know there are a few cars that only got the big trim rings, and even heard of a car with only one door trim ring in anthracite, but I need pictures of how it is shown in the printed catalog, with anthracite down tubes, door handle surrounds, speaker grilles, door rings, grab handles, and on down the line. Thanks!
I just left a message for my MA, who hasn't called back. I'm just having a feeling they might balk at this because of the number of parts involved. We
ll see.

Those links seem to be dead.
Is there another source for the Minspeed Dark Silver paint, or another close match to the Mini's anthracite metallic interior paint?
The following is at least applicable to Gen 1 vehicles.
The finish of the dash and door components is glossy anthracite.
The finish of the down tubes is a flat anthracite.
I removed my cup holder and there was a wear mark on the down tube.
So I custom made a batch of touch-up paint by spraying small amounts of flat black and silver paint on a piece of cardboard. I then mixed it together with a fine brush until it matched the color of the anthracite coin holder lid under fluorescent lighting. I did the touchup and the wear spot is no longer. I think color matching under fluorescent lighting did the trick because it is less forgiving.
Reviving this old thread to let folks know cans of this paint are still available. I just ordered a can from RS Hughes. I have replaced all of the dash trim with the chromeline stuff, but now the door speaker grilles look out of place in silver, so going to spray these in anthracite. Hope this stuff is as good a match as people used to say it was. Will post up a photo after I do a test card.
DON'T order Omni Pak 25116 cans unless you know that they have been filled with the proper paint. 25116 is not a color code but a part number - these cans are filled with propellant and solvent and are to be used with a special filler to have paint added for custom colors. Unless you find one from a MINI person, you'll just get auseless can of propellant.
...and I did swap out that ring with another, this time used Tamiya TS-38 paint for the needle buttons and a minor touch-up on the ring itself, look at the blemish right above the 3k mark, blended right in very well and I like the look of the buttons better too.
Difficult of course to precisely capture on film, but I gave it a go anyways.
Direct sunlight shows slight variance and not exact match:
Took one of the wife's vent surrounds to home dumpster and looked around their racks. Rustoleum has a color that they call 'Black Night metallic'. I could barely detect a difference between the can and the trim ring. So I bought a can. I did a spray card with two coats on an uncoated, unprimed note card, and it looked a tiny bit less blue maybe. Spraying my just cleaned and degreased tweeter surrounds now. Will let you know how those compare to my wife's anthracite interior in a while, but it does look like a pretty darn good match.
Well, like was reported in like the 2nd or 3r post, it is not blue enough. I wouldn't call it too black - the amount of black seems just right, but the hue is just not quite cool enough. Dunno - we'll see how it looks in the daylight - it could be the camera white balance making it look this way. To my eye it isn't quite as off as the camera shows.
Well we can add another failed color match Anthracite rattle can paint to the list.
As a professional and hobbyist I've often used MTN rattle can spray paint for many fabricated pieces I've made. Great product!
After seeing and reading a review on Amazon, I had high hopes that this paint might be the one that would match our MINI Anthracite interior panels.
Although IT IS described as matte finish; I was more interested in the color match. The result is Gun Metal Grey. The black and grey values are dead on.
However, There is an absence of BLUE and more importantly - the lack of metal flake. Therefore; it is = definitely waaaaaaaaaaaaay off. Great brand/paint...but don't waste your time.
I concur with the post(s) above = Tamiya TS-38 seems like my next try.
On as side note: As of this posting - This 11oz can of MTN 94 costs $6.99....S&H = $15.40. . Yep. 2wice the amount for the paint alone.
MTN paint is pretty awesome stuff. Great color selection. You can find it at your local Sam Flax or Binders $9/can...save yourself S&H. Gas is still cheaper at that price.
So glad to see that people are still actively engaged with this!
Thanks for the bump.
Sad to hear the MTN isn't a match --- I've used artist-grade spraypaints in the past and they were great, it was art related stuff though not automotive.
The Tamiya spray is expensive too considering especially the small 100ml size.
My next project related to anthracite will be painting my stalks. Saw this viddie and splurged on his decal kit which arrived last week, will be doing it soonish and will post the results here.
That is awesome!
Thanks for the video and to the added links within the vid description.
I found the Tamiya TS-38 on Amazon. Price seemed somewhat reasonable. Cost of shipping flammables is almost crazy for such a small can.
Unfortunately, all the closest RC hobby stores are 25 - 30 mi outside of my metro (so says Google maps).
Tamiya Paint's are incredible and are very durable (I've done a lot of candy with their paints) and always spray/or air brush wonderfully.
Edit: I should also add and should go without saying that a top coat (whether 1k or 2k) is/should always be used for optimum resistance to UV or handling. Regardless of chemical/solvent or water borne.
yesterday ($7.75 ea. + s/h $6.25).
Here are my comparison test results between Tamiya TS-38 and Mini anthracite:
Updated: Pictured above is a small white, un-primed plastic bottle I sprayed with 2wo light even passes..
I re-photographed the test painted bottle under outdoor sunny skies.
The color is a pretty close match in the black and gray spectrum and the blue hue is actually much better under these lighting conditions.
Pictured above; A comparison between the Tamiya and the Mini bottom speaker bezel taken outdoors under partly cloudy skies. Although it's a little bit on the red/purple (brown) tint side.
Metallic density is a little tiny but fair. I expected the paint to be more of a matte finish but was surprised to find that the Tamiya had a nice soft, near glossy (satin) sheen as a result.
Another example/comparison to the Mini (matte finish) door pull and the Tamiya TS-38....IMO - Still not enough blue to exact match the original matte finished components....
but it's closer than all the other paints I've tried.
Finally; A fair comparison between the Mini anthracite door insert/pocket and the Tamiya paint sample.
This almost works for me. Although by comparison, I still feel the Tamiya TS-38 is just a bit shy in the blue spectrum.
All my other original anthracite interior matte finish components, are scratch and free of discernible wear.
My only objective is to restore/paint the entire anthracite "plastic" door insert/surrounds which have a high gloss finish.
Given that my Tamiya sample is not a completely matte finish, (perhaps because of the the way I sprayed it); This paint may very well meet my expectations after clearcoat.
BTW: To complicate the matter of finding the right match...Yesterday, going out to my Mini, there was a Tesla S parked next to me. As I opened my door, I almost couldn't believe it. The Tesla's paint color matched my anthracite door insert exactly! The Tesla paint color is identified as Midnight Silver Metallic. Not surprising - A mere $65/can on Amazon.
And, yes - I understand NAPA can custom mix/color match an aerosol . Although the only one in my area only hires complete lazy idiots as a prerequisite to work in that store.
