The kit would work with Hella 500s - it's generic for Hella lights and probably most others too. I don't know if the switch in the kit is the same as comes with 500s. All I can suggest is search through the Hella web site or visit a store with a wide range of auto-electrical parts. As I said, I skipped the switch entirely; the lights always come on with the high beam. That's legal in the (Australian) state I live in, but not in some others, so you would need to check your local regulations.

Mine are Alta, but half the kit. (The bar can hold 4 lights, but I only bought 2, because of the need to keep the front license plate).

Here's a very basic how-to: http://web.mac.com/jonnieoh/My_MINI_...ts_How-To.html

this was taken at night with a crappy camera right after I finished the install.

It's 2 sets of OutMotoring bonnet mounts, and 4 4" rally lights. questions, feel free.

@ h20polo93, which brackets did you buy? which lights are you mounting to it. with so many different kits available, we would need a little more information if we are going to help.

In general though, some drilling is required. the only kit I know that does not require drilling pinches your grill (by pinch I mean dent) and has a huge bar... let me know i have pictures of it, in fact, Im selling it if your interested, with three FF200s

They are OEM mini driving lights. I don't have any pictures of the mounting. I fabricated a small cross brace which spans the bumper supports and two Z brackets which drop down from the cross brace and go through the lower grill.

Soccs can you post pics please.

Also Creeve can you post pics of the cross bar etc? Did you mount that cross bar behind the bumper so that you had to take off the bumper? Can you measure the diameter of those lights b/c they look perfect!

Also planning on fitting some spots....

have 2 questions:

1. Should I go with chrome or black base units on my Dark Silver R56 MCS. I have black racing stripes so think the black base units will tie inn quite nicely although I actually like the chrome surrounds on the headlights as well....gut says chrome...
2. How do you switch 'em on (are they incorperated onto the light stalk switch) or do they have their own "toggle" switch as for the fog lights...?

How are the OEM lights switched? Getting those adds another toggle just right of the door lock toggle, right? Do they then come on with high beams or what?

I often drive down dark lonely country roads late at night, do the OEM rally lights really light up the place (for seeing deer for example), or am I better off with aftermarket? I'm planning to trade the MZ3 for a MCCs someday and I know the OEMs are $$$ but I'd be nervous installing aftermarkets on a brand new car.

Tazio -- I really like the blacked-out headlight rings etc.

IMHO no light as small as the OEM lights is going to do much that's useful.
I live on a "dark lonely country road", except my concerns are kangaroos and wombats rather than deer. I went for after-market spread-beam lights - good for twisty roads but also good for seeing wildlife approached from the side of the road just that little bit sooner. On an earlier car, seeing a roo early meant it bounced down the side of my car instead of a head-on at 60mph.

Short of the really exxy HID driving lights, one of the widest beams is the Hella 1000 Black Lightning, which conveniently is also one of the cheapest. Not strongly built, but if you're not going rallying they seem OK. I used the Hella wiring kit as well, so it's all name-brand stuff and shouldn't give a MINI dealer any warranty concerns. OutMotoring have mounting brackets to suit. Main disadvantage of the lights is that they use old-style H2 globes, which are tiny and tend to burn out every 6-12 months (admittedly, with heavy use) - but they only take 5 minutes to change.

Pictures below of how they mount, and the spread they provide (obviously, they're much brighter than the interior lights - I adjusted that just for the photo). They still light up 400 or 500 yards straight down the road - fine for 60 or 70mph.

Most driving light manufacturers' web sites have diagrams to show the distance and spread of their lights, if you want to look at other types.

Lights can be switched into the high beam (mine are - simple and no extra toggle switch needed) or on a separate toggle switch that only work when high beam is on (ie you can have high beam on without the lights). Depends on state regulations.

Nice advice and fantastic pics, pw4. I could probably handle installing a set myself, but guess even a professional install of aftermarket lights would be a good bit cheaper than the OEMs

And yes of course, it's deer I'm worried about here in the US. Anyone know what the regs are in Illinois?

I'm baaack....

My old 2002 MCS, with two sets of oem lights.

a couple photoshops of what I expect my 2010 to look like, using the alta lightbar kit. It's not supposed to work on the 2010 model I think but I like the way it looks.

So do the OEM driving lights do anything of real value when coupled with the stock Xenon HIDs?

I'm pretty sure when used with the xenon high beams you could see much further.

Finely got my four driving lights the way I wanted them. The spacing is based on several pictures I've seen of they way they were mounted on the Classic Mini. There is a picture of John Cooper standing between a classic and a 1st Generation on the cover of MC2 and another driving shot in the article showing the lights spaced this way. It also lets more air into the emgine as the grill behind the two outside lights is blocked anyway.
