2 stock OEM MINI Rally Lights. OEM black caps. Chrome vinyl lettering done by Charleston Wraps. I actually have a set that I painted Chili Red with chrome lettering but the black and chrome seems to be the head turner.

I have this setup currently, but am thinking about relocating to the more traditional location as I question the strength of the bumper cover to hold the lights on the license plate mount.

Brackets

For those who installed the OEM rally lights, did you really have to buy a new grille?

I have an R56 S with the JCW aero kit and seems like I need to buy a new grille with the brackets. Curious of others' experience.

Yes, you do. outmotoring.com supply them as well as dealers. Alternatively, you can cut a slot in the grille yourself if you're capable or brave.
There are also non-OEM brackets for non-MINI lights that still use the same mounting points on the R56. VIP Custom Parts https://www.vipcustomparts.com/driving%20lights.htm make them, and if you go that page and scroll down it has a picture of where the grille has to be cut, at least for their brackets - I don't know if they're a bit wider than the OEM brackets or anything. (You can't use OEM brackets for anything other than OEM lights.).
My R56 picture here if it's any help eg to see where the brackets fit through the grille.

I use the VIP brackets, very solid pieces. Quad light bar bracket is finicky though.

And for those who went down the OEM route. Did you get the Trim with the Switch/Button? At $116 - I find it scandalous! What's the alternative, not have the button and lights only turn in with high beams?

all in all I'm just surprised about some of the prices of one of the vendors.

You can always use a generic dipole switch

I use that and shoved it through the grommet and then fed it through the seam between the two trim pieces and it just sits on my steering column. Unless you're looking right at it you'd never tell. Of course you can always buy a generic switch and trim your existing trim piece as well
