Interior/Exterior painting my r56 satin black
painting my r56 satin black
im thinking of painting my chili red satin black. i wan't to do it my self but don't have a clue as to what steps need to be taken. at first i thougt of doing the prep work and paint. but after searching on the web i think im going to get a body shop to do that for me and ill do the painting. i don't know if this will be cheaper than getting them to do the whole thing. as for equipment i have access to what i would need to paint the car. so if anyone here has painted their mini and wants to share some of their wisdom please let me know.
PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT IT YOURSELF! Chances are if you dont have experience in painting cars you will mess it up and it will cost you a lot of money. It is always best to keep your car the stock color, unless you plan to keep it until the wheels fall off it. Good paint job will cost you though. Just my 2 cents.
sweet... i love satin black and i havent seen any MINIs that are fully this color. I think it will look awesome... However, i would not recommend doing this yourself. I for one love to DIY for as much as i possibly can, but ive heard that painting cars is something that is by no means an easy task, even if the prep work is done. Ive also heard that satin, or flat colors are actually not that easy to paint and look nice as it shows imperfections pretty easily. If you do end up doing this, please post some pictures as if it turns out how i think it will.... i know what i would do if my car gets in an accident and needs a respray!
ok ill post some pics after its done. well im going to get some numbers from different shops and see whats up. if its not like $2000 i might get it done. im using the fireballed tuner interceptor as an example.
My dad did a flat black 1953 Studebaker. It looked GREAT. He sold it right away though so I can't speak for how it will wear. I want to "rat rod" my pickup, flat with red pinstripes. Wide whites and moon caps. I think it will look cool on my 1999 Silverado.

You're not going to find anyone to do this right for less than $3,500. Expect to pay $5,000.

Dude, there is no way in hell I would put a $2,000 paint job on my MINI. Try $5,000+ for a QUALITY paint job that won't look like total crap in a year or 2.
I wonder how long this fad will last?
Don't get me wrong. . . I think it looks neat.
I have a matte black finish on the bonnet of my old Land Rover. I did this to prevent glare while climbing hills. Because there is no protective clear coat, it is very hard to maintain the look of the finish. Thankfully for me, it is a Land Rover, and I simply rub used motor oil into the paint at every oil change to keep the matte sheen looking good.

Most professional flat paint jobs still have a protective clearcoat....it just happens to be matte. The matte clear coat should do a pretty good job protecting it from the sun and weather....It's still a pain to clean though.
You are very ambitious to attempt any DIY paint job, especially on a brand-new car.
If you had an '02 MINI with lots of miles, that'd be one thing, but to try this on a brand-new car, with no previous automobile painting experience...
You are brave!

Flat black is definitely HOT ... but it's hard to keep clean. I assume you'll have it as daily driver. Not a bad choice and I always back you up man
Oh, leave it to the pro, it's not easy. Try doing it in small pieces, like spoiler or something. Otherwise, I am afraid your effort will not gain what you expected. (Not saying you can't do it )

If you want to go get it done, like others have said in this thread, getting it done right is going to be $5k+++ for a good quality paint job no matter the finish. Its a lot of labor, prep, etc. Now if you want to do the engine bay also theres a whole nother can of worms... labor to yank the motor and everything else there, to put it back. Sheesh. You could also get a lot of satin black vinyl? And then you can always peel it off.
Food for thought!
