Interior/Exterior Whalen Owners, What Am I Doing Wrong With Install?
Whalen Owners, What Am I Doing Wrong With Install?
Hello all you Whalen owners.
I just received the adapter for me Cravenspeed SS and [tried] to install my Whalen shift ****. It seemed to go on fine but it spins freely and is therefore not ideal when shifting aggressively. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any input and, if I am just being 'blonde', try to be nice.

Does your aftermarket shift lever have the same horizontal slot in the top of it that the stock shift lever has? If you look inside the Whalen shift ****, there's a pin that's meant to engage the slot in the factory lever.
If your shift **** is spinning freely when it's installed, then either your new shift lever doesn't have the slot, or you don't have the **** fully engaged.

The shift lever does have the slot in it but it seems that the plastice sleeve adapter does not screw down far enough to allow the shift **** to engage the slot/pin. I will look into it further.
Also, I bought the short shifter through Webb Motorsports and the adapter through Cravenspeed. Cravenspeed assured me that the adapters are the same...but I wonder.

If your Whalen shift **** is spinning and the locking mechanism is NOT, then your **** is broken.
This happened to me when I let someone check out the Whalen in my car and they somehow had the urge to twist it off...and broke it.
Doug sent me a replacement for half price and evidently changed the design with newer models.
This happened back in mid 2004.
Is your Whalen **** a brand new one or did you get it used?

The **** is not broken.
The shift boot is not in the way.
I am pulling up on the 'ringed' slider on the ****.
The plastic sleeve is not screwing down far enough to allow the pin inside the **** to engage the slot in the shift arm. Perhaps I need to just screw the plastic sleeve down with some assistance (plyers) to allow the **** to engage the slot. (?)

It shouldn't be that hard to install. If you need pliers or another tool, either there is operator error involved or Doug somehow machined it incorrectly.
If you continue to have problems, I'd contact Doug and talk with him about the problem.

I figured it out guys. I just needed to take my time and screw the plastic adapter down far enough to allow the pin in the shift **** to engage the slot in the shift lever. I just wasn't twisting it hard enough to screw it down far enough. BTW, wow, what a difference in the way my short shifter works!
Thanks for all the help.
Cheers, Doug.
