Interior/Exterior Body Color Fender Flares (or arches...)???
Body Color Fender Flares (or arches...)???
Saw pics of Ovrezee's yellow MCS on the forum...
Looks great I think with the fender flares (or wheelwell arches?...) and the narrow horizontal panel (forgot what this is called...) under the doors painted the same color as the body color.
So, wondering if anyone can advise as to what it would take to do this on the R56 I'm about to order...
Several options I think....
A. Have body shop paint them?
Anyone have an idea how much it might cost to have this done?
B. Do It Myself?
Is this realistic?
Would I need to remove the items to paint or paint them in place?
Is it even possible to get MINI paint color to do this myself?
Appreciate any and all input!

About to take the plunge on R56....

I would have a body shop do it. You can do a search on people that have done it and I am sure some of them have posted quotes. I would not attempt to do it yourself, you can read Karl's horror story about his paint for his aerokit, however if you were still inclined you can find your paint code on the inside of your bonnet. the piece below the door is called a side skirt. I think the arches look great body color so go for it!

I would have a body shop do it. I have mine done and the work is somewhat tricky, you have to sand down the moldings to get the plastic grainy texture off of them. Doing this can be tough because the moldings are somewhat thin. So using a power sander on them might take a bit of skill, if not you may be hand sanding for a loooong time.
Although some people said they have skipped the sanding process, im guessing they had to lay on a thick layer of filler primer or paint?
but in my opinion unless you are skilled at body work i would take it to a shop

Like the others said, have a shop do it. Painting plastic body parts is one of those "if you have to ask, have a pro do it" kind of things. The prep work has do be done correctly, and certain primers/sealers have to be used.
I've seen painted arches and rockers that looked like they were metal and came painted from the factory, and I've seen some that looked like they were done in the backyard... to put it kindly.

hee is a discussion about sanding vs primer/filler paint. its the difference between a $500 job and a $2K job. the consensus, as far as i read, is that you get what you pay for so save the 2K

So, interested....
Do you want to PM me what it would cost, including shipping to SF Bay area??
Thanks,
Mark
Does that mean anything painted looks like metal?
Your car looks great however your comment isnt entirely accurate. The mini dealership has a service center but it outsources its bodywork to local shops.
Anyone interested in this mod should shop around for the quality of their paint / prep work and prices if so inclined.

After you order let me know what color and we'll get some pricing. I think it should be in the $300 range. Depends on color as some colors do cost more. But the more people that want sets the cheaper it will be as we can run a batch of one color.

thanks
The process is pretty simple, I go to Walmart and get a 89cent can of paint, spray then ship J/K
Actually we take the set of trim then prep it by sanding with a couple different grits, then we use a degreaser/paint prep that removes everything from mold release to finger print oil. Then spray it with a flex agent. After that it will get a coat of primer, then that is sanded as needed and reprimered if necessary. Then we spray the base coat, clear coat of your car. Peices come out great. This is how we did the green trim on my race car. So we can do any of the peices. Let me know if you have any other questions.

It's easy but time consuming. I had a spare set of arches painted... it took 6-8 hours to carefully remove all of the trim and then replace it with the painted bits.
Always buy new body clips... even if you didn't break the old ones.

Thanks for the info and tip, agranger!
So, you just remove a lot of 'body clips' to take off trim pieces???
Thanks...
