removing stripes?

So I've been delaying peeling my stripes off my car. They are beat up and the stripe look just isn't doing it for me or my homeboys lately.

So I get the hair dryer out and all ready. Peel a corner of the stripe and the difference between the exposed surface and the surface under the stripe is major.

The exposed surface looks cloudy and has some swirls in it obviously. I tried just a bit of water on a rag to see if i could clean the surface and it didn't really do anything.

So does any one have any experience with this. Will I just be able to clay bar it and it will be fine or am I just screwed here?

oh yeah basic info.

I was told that a good coat of wax, would solve the problem if I ever removed my stripes.

I'm thinking that'd only help for a while until the wax washes off. Just a guess...

Gonna need the paint polished out; either DIY or pay a pro. Shouldn't have too much differential fade on an 06, so likely just car washing swirlies/ haze.

Is a hair dryer all you need to remove old strips? We're going to redo my girlfriends stripes soon becuase the people she had do them did a poor job. I'm not worried about the clean up part when they are off, I'm just wondering how you actually get them off.

You guys really need to hang out in the Detailing101 forum. Check out my post on how I removed some stripes.

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...hlight=miniclo

As for evening out the differences, there are a couple of reasons for why it looks different.

1.)There is potential lightness/darkness issue between the paint versus what was exposed and what wasn't. There isn't much that can be done to rectify this. Waxing may help a bit to restore an even shine.

2.)The exposed paint is probably all swirled out while the paint under the stripes is relatively free of swirls. You need to polish these swirls out, and that will greatly minimize the difference.

3.)Wax buildup along the edges. Everytime you wax your car, the wax doesn't get under the vinyl but sits at the edges, so you get these borders. These can be removed with claybar or when you polish, preferably using a Porter Cable dual action orbital polisher.

To remove your stripes, you'll want to have some Goo Gone or Goo Off handy. A plastic razor blade or a lil'chizler is very handy for removing the vinyl. A hair dryer is also very helpful.

Thanks for the tips. I just read your post in that thread of removing the stripes and it will help out alot. Her stripes are badly discolored and by the time I came around there wasn't much I could do to help. They are also peeling off at the ends on the back stripe and when I tried to peel one off to see what would happen the pieces just flaked.

Hopefully it will only need an orange pad to help clean up the paint afterwards.

wow mine aren't anything like that. mine peel right off as if i put them on last week. All in one piece and they stretch like the vynal is new. Truth be told I really won't even need goo-gone but I'll use it any way.

The biggest difference I see is that the paint where the stripes were is just "cloudy" I'm guessing it's swirls and wax build up on the paint where the stripes weren't. I'm lucky that the only summer my car has seen has been 4 hours north of chicago.

thanks octaneguy. knower of all things detail related.
