3M Carbon Fiber-look self-adhesive wrap discussion

I posted this up in the Announcements forum, but you can't reply there, and I figured there'd be questions. So...here's what I wrote there.

This stuff is very, very cool. It looks like carbon fiber -- a LOT. But it's flexible, heat-able and stretchable so it can conform to all sorts of shapes. It has 3M adhesive already on it, so you don't have to use any messy spray-adhesive or anything. Just peel and stick. The adhesive has tiny air channels so you're unlikely to trap any air bubbles behind it.

We sell it in various sizes. You could use it to cover interior trim, down-tubes, handles, bezels, you name it. It has an expected lifespan of 12 years of interior use, four years of outdoor use. You could cover your roof!

Installation is similar to installing any self-adhesive vinyl. (You apply it dry, not with water.) Use a hair dryer or heat gun to get it to wrap around surfaces. If you're not comfortable with this kind of thing, your local vinyl or tint installer should have no problem with it.

I don't yet have pictures of it installed on a MINI -- there are some out there, but it wouldn't be fair of me to use someone else's pics. Stay tuned for some accent-work on our own car.

I took a first shot at installing some of the stuff myself. Keep in mind here that I have NO experience doing any kind of vinyl or tint work. I figured it would go worse than it did...

I like this stuff!

Are you going to be selling custom size sheets or just a few sizes?

Follow the link, and you can see we have quite a few sizes. If one of those doesn't work for you, give us a call, and we can work up something custom.

I still don't have any installed on our MINI, but I did apply some to the dash of our Subaru WRX STI. See what you think:

Yes, and people do put it on car exteriors. It's rated for two years of outdoor weathering, although that's installed vertically (not horizontally like on a roof). We sell a piece that's big enough for an entire MINI roof.

My wife and I have been looking this and similar products to cover our kitchen cabinet doors. Kind of pricey but it would be awfully cool.

I have seen this vinyl in the woodgrain on some interior stuff and it looks real!!! Depending on your cabinet door design this type of vinyl might be cheaper to use then buying new cabinets, or door facings..

Do you have any pics of it on a roof? Interested to see what people have done with it and how it looks

i think when i come in to pickup my wheels and tires, i will purchase some of this for my downtubes and rear aero kit. the "mesh" stickers are yellowed and peeling so the CF look wrap maybe a good replacement!

i'll probably buy more in the future, but want to make sure i have SOME skill putting it on before i end up with a pile of it that i messed up! lol

How thin and flexible is it? Can you remove it like most other vinyl stickers (unpeel with heat gun)?

Thanks

How do you suppose this stuff would hold up on a roof in the 100+ degree F Texas sun?
