[Hawaii] For Sale - 1966 Cooper S and 71 Mini.

Hi gang,

Due to some financial "fun" I need to sell both of my remaining classic Minis. I'd prefer that they go to a MINI / Mini person who's going to enjoy them, but if that can't happen ...well, they just need to get sold. Here's the info:

--------------------
My current financial situation dictates that the Minis must go. This is not a "fire sale", but I need to sell the cars and get something else. For sale is a 1966 Austin Mini Cooper S and a 1971 998cc car.

The Good: 1966 Austin Cooper S (LHD car). All the bits are there (that I know of). Heritage Certificate. I have no reason to believe it's not a true Cooper S.
The Bad: not the original (but still) a 1275 S. Not running all that well. "Spaghetti" wiring in the engine bay. Doesn't have the Cooper S wheels.
The Ugly: If I could tell you what was under the silicone / bondo in the roof gutters. The front section of the floor pans have been replaced with a non original replacement.
Asking Price : $6000.

The Good: RHD car. Body is in very good condition. There is an area of bubbling under the paint behind the driver's door (doesn't "give" when pushed") and a very small area on the driver's side front wing. 10x5 ROH Contessa wheels with new (less than 1000 miles) Yokohama A008s. Included with the sale are two 40IDE Weber carbs one Weber manifold, one set of 7.5" Cooper S brakes (need rebuilding). May include an A+ 1275cc engine with sale.
The Bad: 998cc car. 1.25" SU carb that needs adjusting / rebuilding. Drum brakes all around (twin leading shoes up front). Car has a 1965 Austin title but has mostly 71 parts on it.
The Ugly: None that I can really think of.
Asking Price: $8000 firm.

I am located near Honolulu, Hawaii (Kaneohe) . Shipping to the west coast runs roughly $950. I will consider a partial trade for a 1988-91 Honda CRX (either HF or Si).

You can contact me here or the 'ole e-mail address (latka at hawaii dot rr dot com)

I can provide additional photos to interested parties.

-Andy

Nifty! I notice slight variations in the cars and wonder if Austin changed things during production the way smaller companies did. The LHD car has exterior door hinges and right side gas cap. The RHD one has internal door hinges and left side gas cap. It's been so long since I had my 66 S that I can't remember those details. Thanks for the post. Good luck selling them.

Yes - the 66 is a "MK I " car whereas the 71 is a "MK III". MK I cars had 2 piece sliding windows, tiny tail lights, and the 'moustache' grille - as well as external door hinges. MK II cars had external hinges with the larger square tail lights, and MK III cars had internal hinges, a new grille, and the larger tail lights... there were (3?) other series beyond that, but I think right now the MK III is the newest that we can bring into the US.

When I first got the '71 (the one with the Union Jack roof) I had people coming out of the woodwork asking me to buy it. I guess they were blowin' smoke up my rear, 'cause other than a few inquiries it has been a ghost town over here... then again, I have yet to put the cars in the paper. Just online so far.

Yes, he contacted me a week or so ago and came by to look at the car. From what he said he really liked it but can't buy it at the moment.

Suggestion.

Latka,

Based on the turnout at the last MINI event which was pretty good, and the fact that not that many Hawaii owners are on NAM, you might do very well to just show up at one or more of our MINI events.

Your minis look great and are better in person side by side to the new ones, but you're not getting the exposure that would help you sell them.

Possible future events to help you-
May 7th early morning at Pearl ridge- we have an arthritis foundation walk and we are thinking of putting up a tent in the parking lot and let people know about our MINI club- but you are welcome to attend and show your minis.

June 12-
Pearl Harbor Auto Show
no fee, just show up. Show your car and make it known it is for sale

July-
British car club in Hawaii -usually has a summer annual car show at Kapiolani park. Also good general pubic attendance walking by. Usually our entry fee is waived.

Late summer-
Leeward Community college auto show/expo
We had a few MINIs there last year and will likely get invited back. Good turnout of general pubic, no fee. Show your car and we can get a lunch for you too.

SCCA autocross Solo II-
Each month we meet at Hawaii raceway park all day. Lots of car enthusiast there with about 80+ drivers each event. Let people know that you are selling. No fee to attend, just show up from 8 to 4pm. Lunchtime is always good- biggest crowds.

Wow - lots of stuff going on. I'm going to write those dates down and see about making it out to the events. I knew about the BCCH show, but not the others.

Speaking of the BCCH...went on a cruise with them not too long ago out to Kaena point. Nice drive, but man there were some snotty a-holes in that club. I guess that's to be expected though with that sort of car group. Even had a guy stand there and tell me how "incorrect" my Union Jack was on the roof. Pointed out to him that he might want to complain to Rover instead of me since they're the ones that made it! ... probably my first and last BCCH event.
