American Idol- Did you vote??
>>b/c clay aiken rocks  he's the best.
>>
>>actually, ruben did get his exposure on this season's AI. he performed on one of the early shows, maybe the wild card show? can't remember but he did.
Clay Aiken is like ABBA. I remember hearing ABBA sing back in the day and they were great. However, when they were interviewed, I could not understand them through their heavy Swedish accents. It's strange how one can sing without an accent, but it returns in your speaking voice.

Apparently Clay's record sales are phenomenal. Even though Ruben won the competition, maybe those who voted for Clay are more likely to buy the CD's. He may be appealing to an older demographic with more purchasing power?
Simon said something like that in an interview, that the music industry doesn't get it , that there's an older population of consumers that want to buy records that they're not producing.
American Idol is pop culture but it's also, IMHO, a masterful marketing machine. Talent, or not, they will sell what the market votes for. Some of the contestants are there more because of market appeal than singing talent.

Clay lost the competition but is doing quite well.
Last night they mentioned his CD has sold 2.4 million copies to go triple platinum which is excellent.
American Idol is all about packaging the right blend of singing talent, image, and appeal. People have to want to buy your CD for whatever reason.
I think once you get to the top 6 to 8 they all are quite good and have to project the desireable image to the public to get votes. The judges can say all they want but america will have to back it up.
An interesting thing is to watch how each singer has improved and grown over the weeks of competition and intensive practice. I'd like them each to do a great performance and then let us vote.

It's funny that you made the connection between marketing and AI. To take it further, most reality TV shows are big commercials.

Agree completely. The fact that people watch those shows tells you as much about the populace as it does the networks. Man isst was man ist.

I had to think about this one for a while....doesn't 'man isst was man ist' mean 'you are what you eat'? Or something like that?

I actually typed it wrong. Shoulda been "Man ist was man isst," which is literally, "you are what you eat," but it seemed more appropriate in relation to AI and marketing, loosely translated, "you consume what you are." Kinda obtuse double entendre.

Tonight we heard 11 contestants. The competition is getting tougher.
Who will make the cut.
The phone lines are tied up pretty bad.
Get those votes in!!!!
Go Camile and Jasmine.
I thought Camile did better than last week but Jasmine wasn't her best.

Agree with your assessment. Anyone ever try hyperterminal as a dialer?

Wow...I wish I had American Idol finalists from my state to vote for.
Jasmine is pretty good...she has a very mature voice for her age. Can't say I am a fan of Camile.
GO GEORGE & LATOYA!!!!

CLOSE YOUR EYES IF YOU DON"T WANT TO KNOW THE RESULTS YET!!

yes, and thank goodness the show was only 30 minutes long. I can't believe they tried to stretch last weeks show to one hour. that was ridiculous and frustrating to watch. It's bad enough tuesday nights are 2 hours long!!!!!!
Something comes to mind.
The show and the judges want to have viewers tune in each week.
They want the remaining people to do well.
They want to create controversy.
They want it to be fun.
They don't want it to be predictable and boring.
They don't want everybody to look and act the same.
They can't afford to drag out the shows and lack substance.
Funny, I thought that there were more votes cast in the prelimary rounds than were cast last night.
Is America loosing interest in AI???? :???:

I think it's come to the point where all the producers want is to sell commercial air time. it's ridiculous. Tonights show was great, they cut to the chase and it was still fun and exciting. Last week was just exhausting.
>>Interesting. 19.5M votes nationwide. Verizon said Hawaii put in 1.5M votes! Way to go Hawaii!
A recent newspaper article mentions that last week the votes were 18.5 million.
I seem to remember at least twice in earlier shows from several weeks ago that the voting was more like 22 to 27 million votes.
Last week the Verizon count was about 3 million which broke some records so this week it was lower at 1.68 million.
Problem is that AT&T, a sponsor refuses to release it's numbers so we really don't know what is truely happening.
I would think that unless things were kept fresh and different the public might loose interest over many weeks.
They need that soap opera like drama to keep them tuned in for each show.
(By the way the article mentions that there is nationwide support for Camile and that the Hawaii votes were not needed this week) However next week is a whole new deal and strong performances are going to be required. This has got to be a wake up call to those who are riding the bubble!

I just wish that the American public would be smarter about who they were voting for. There is at least one person on that show right now that sings pretty badly, but keeps staying out of the bottom three for some reason...probably because of how he looks.
Yes, I agree.
But looks do count.
Naturally we want singing to be the most important.
Simon stresses that presenting the "whole package" is the way to survive.
I'd say that after a few more weeks the weaker singers will be eliminated.
Once down to the final 6 I think they are relatively even. Take your pick.
Each contestant has to earn votes to stay on each week.
Those will be tough eliminations but the exposure will be good.
They should just have fun with it and not stress
