Big Chance to Autocross-Bring your MINI!!!

OK folks.

All members of Hawaii MINI Motoring Club are invited (and all MINI owners as well) to have fun at the 2005 Test and Tune Sports Car Club of America event on Saturday January 29th at Hawaii Raceway Park.

Please read the information below for details. You can arrange to have a BENTO lunch delivered that day for $5.00 each. Email Amy by Friday, January 28 before 5pm if you want a BENTO.

Deadline for payment is wednesday 1/26/05.

If the club is interested, we can do a short “classroom” lesson on car handling and have an instructor walk the track with the drivers prior to heat 1. Let me know if you are interested so I can make the proper preparations.

The course for the day will be set up for a typical Autocross session. We will have multiple instructors available to assist and teach you how to drive the course. If you don't have a helmet you can borrow one- bring a bandana to cover your hair when using the loaner helmet.

Hope to see you there. You can drive if you sign up in time. You can ride along if you have a helmet. Or you can join us and watch the fun and burning rubber.

She needs to receive payment by 1/26.

You still have time.
Send a check for $35 for the event by this monday.

Add $5 more if you want a Bento lunch.
Send her an email to let her know you are mailing the check and if you want a Bento lunch so she can order it.

NOT much time left!

You can Drive all day for $35

Or
Come and ride along if you have a helmet for free.
Or
Come to watch for free.

All MINI owners are welcome to attend. We'll have a few MINIs from plain stock to modified ones and more.

Last "two" days to sign up.
You can send your payment today and still make the deadline.

If we have enough HMMC members I can get a little instruction class going.
So which HMMC members are attending besides me and Doug?

Well I talked to Amy and I am putting a check in the mail today.

Now I just have to make sure I don't stay out to late on the 28th so that I can actually make it.

Regalic,
Outstanding. Come early if you can so that you are ready to tech your car.
HRP open from 7am. 8 am would be fine. Just be there before 830am.

OK, as a bonus for any super late people.
If you decide to drive at Test and tune and you are worried about paying in time. I can maybe help you out but you've got to decide in the next few hours and email or PM me.

Normally the night before any of these events you should be drinking lots of water (not beer) and getting rest early. Usually it's tiring to be at an all day event. Autocross is normally four runs and a few fun runs at the end of the day. On Saturday, it would be easy to do up to 15+ runs and be done by 4pm.

So- Don't delay another second. Make your decision and join us for saturday.
In the event you don't drive, come by anyway anytime on saturday to watch.

Open faced helmet is fine. Snell rated. M2000 or SA2000.
Closed face helmet is what most of us have and while that is OK,
The open faced helmet is what the instructors use, is less enclosed, and a little less hot.

I got my helmet at cyclepro (Harley davidson shop on Nimitz and lagoon)

Snell "M" (Motorcycle) rated helmets are designed for motorcycling and other motorsports. They offer slightly less protection than SA rated helmets.
Key differences between M and SA Rated Helmets (from Snell website):
* SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not.
* SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not.
* SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets aren't street legal).

Our autocross requires M not SA rating helmets. Any current year M rated helmet is OK for solo II in our region.
http://www.soloracer.com/m2000helmets.html

Examples of open faced M2000 helmets-
Pyrotect $118.99

his lightweight open face helmet from Pyrotect is made of composite fiberglass and has a plush comfortable interior. Very similar in design to the Bell Mag 4 (only M rated instead of SA).
Standard Features:
* Fiberglass construction
* Open face design
* Available in white or black
* Snell M2000 rating

G Force GF650 in black or white for $109.99

A great bang-for-the-buck autocross helmet! The G Force GF650 is a lightweight open face M2000 rated helmet that is good for those just getting started with autocross. A lightweight Z-38 composite shell reduces weight while the addition of our G-Flow ventilation system to this helmet helps get the heat away from your head. A nylon liner covers the G-78 impact liner. The adjustable visor comes with a tinted visor strip. Comes with protective nylon helmet bag. Available in White, Black, or Orange.
Features:
* Snell M2000 certification
* Lightweight fiberglass shell
* Comfortable nylon nterior
* Front/Rear adjustable vents
* Shaded visor attached with metal screws
* Comes with protective nylon helmet bag

Add shipping cost for Hawaii-
US Priority Mail or 2nd day Air are options.

Why open faced helmet when driving solo II in airbag equipted car?
http://www.soloracer.com/helmettech.html
SCCA AIRBAG ADVISORY **
November 16, 2004 - Notification from SCCA National Staff
It has been brought to the attention of SCCA Technical Services that the use of full-face or closed face helmets while driving vehicles with active airbag restraint systems may result in injuries in the event of a crash that deploys the airbag. Because of the location of the steering wheel relative to the driver's position, the airbag axis is on a level with the driver's chin. In a crash with airbag deployment, contact with the chin area of a full-face helmet can be so powerful "that fractures to the jaw cannot be ruled out". (Hubert Gramling, FIA Institute, FT3/AF, 18.5 1999)
Therefore it is highly recommended that full-face helmets not be used in vehicles with functioning airbag systems. Potentially more restrictive language is currently being considered for 2005, which could appear in an early 2005 issue of FasTrack.

Special offer for HMMC at Test and tune

For all those HMMC members that are driving in the Test and Tune-

Curtis Lee, SCCA Hawaii chair is offering a "short class" on solo II autocrossing. I will meet with him at 7am tomorrow and find out when he has time and we need to get there early and be ready as a group.

Curtis has been autocrossing the same Datsun 240Z since 1977 and regularly comes in first place at our monthly autocross. It's fair to say we could learn alot from him.

There will be multiple instructors to help students- please ask for help and try different instructors. You can also ride along with other drivers when you are not either working or driving.

Wet and rainy but still it didn't spoil our fun.

Four of us were a bit soggy by the end of the day but got in three heats before the weather finally turned sour with a thunderstorm.

I got two nice blisters from battling the standing lakes of water with a push broom most of the morning.

Heat one was wet with light rain.
Heat two was fairly dry with a few sprinkles of sunlight- I got to do a few runs in my street tires-215/45-17 Bridgestone S-03 on Centerline RPM 17x7 rims which I had been interested to try on a rainy day. While it did OK (best of 5 runs was 67.6 seconds), I was sliding around a fair amount.

Heat three I put on moderately worn 205/50-15 Kumho Victoracers on 15" holey rims and on run one with a passenger got 65.6 seconds. Best of 5 runs was 65.2 seconds but I never got my tires up much above 130 degrees. It was 79 degrees and even my engine was barely heating up when I opened the bonnet. Would have been good to have my new Kumho V710 tires and see what difference that would have made, but I've saving them for next season. So the Kumhos allowed for a 2.5 second difference on a 65 second course over street tires. Given autocross alignment and suspension settings.

Finally went on a run with Curtis driving his 240Z. Felt like a MINI on Nitrous.
Gobs of torque and very controlled handling. Not much to say except "I wish I could drive like that someday".

Heat four was cancelled by the safety steward due to rain and lightning.
Then it started to pour.

Many thanks to Dreamin for helping me with my wheels in the rain.

Thanks to the Hawaii SCCA team for the instructors and safe/ well organized event.

Next up- 2/6 sunday SCCA solo II (for real). See other thread for special offer to HMMC members at next autocross.

Another chance to autocross!

I guess everybody was watching the "Super bowl" on 2/6.

Meanwhile a few MINIs were doing their best at the last regular Solo II event of the 2004 season. See http://www.sccahawaii.org/Race12.html
Those event recaps are full of pictures and "commentary".
MINIs were well represented in the PAX top ten.

Before the start of next season in Solo II we have to "finish" this season.

So on March 6th at Hawaii Raceway park you can watch the Championship Driver run offs for the 2004 SCCA Solo II season. The top point winners in each class face each other for three runs. Best time wins for each class.

This is followed at 1130am with registration for modified fun runs in the afternoon for $10. You'll need a helmet but you don't need to be a member of SCCA. This is the cheapest ever opportunity for you to drive on an autocross course. You'll drive one heat (maybe 6+ runs) and work on the course the other heat.

Schedule for the day-
RUN OFF's
0700 - 0830 Track set-up
0730 - 0830 Registration & tech inspection
0830 - 0845 Run-off driver's meeting. Turn in registration forms at the trailer
0845 - 0930 Heat 1 & 2 (run-off) drivers grid cars (2 different grids) Track open for walking
0930 - 1000 Heat 1 & 2 (run-off) drivers report to trailer for work assignment
1000 - 1300 Heat 1 & 2 (run-off) (first car out promptly at 10am)
1130 - 1230 Registration & tech inspection
FUN RUN'S
1245 - 1300 Fun-run driver's meeting.
1300 - 1330 Heat 3 & 4 (fun-run) drivers grid cars (2 different grids) Track open for walking
1330 - 1400 Heat 3 & 4 (fun-run) drivers report to trailer for work assignment
1400 - 1700 Heat 3 & 4 (fun-run)
1700 - 1730 Clean-up

http://sccahawaii.org/runoff.html

Hope to see you there. Bring your video camcorder or cameras!
