Oil Filter of Choice

I'm sure there are many opinions, as to "which" oil filter is the best to use on a mini, but I thought I'd just ask, since I'm fixing to change the oil soon in our mini.

When my wife owned her BMW, we always used an OEM oil filter from the dealer. That said, I just wanted to see if others, think an OEM filter is best, or if an aftermarket filter - such a the Purolator One - is the better choice.

Thanks!

OEM is one of the few OEM parts that are reasonably priced. OEM all the way this time.

Remember, BMW doesn't make oil filters, they buy from a filter OEM, mark up the price to cover their costs and profit and resell to us. Maybe Mann , Bosch, whomever. No real need to buy direct from the dealer.

Thanks for the replays!

I must be living a "very" sheltered life! :-) I'm not sure I've ever heard of a Mann filter. But then again, I do live in the southeast! ;-)

Any ideas where these are available? Local auto parts store, specialty shop, etc.?

Thanx again gents!

Hello,

You did not say which MINI you had, but here is what we have for the Gen1 MINI R50 R52 R53. These are the supercharged and non supercharged engine filters of the Gen 1. We have them here. Tri-tech engines : single overhead cam with spark plug wires and a single 4 pack coil on top.

For Gen 2 MINI / PSA engines. Turbo and Non Turbo, 2007+ R56 R55 R57 R58 R59 & R60 R61 . These are the dual overhead cam engines. .

They looks like this for the OEM MINI Gen 2 filter ( R56+), we have them in singles and pack sets. Comes with filter , O ring for the housing and the drain plug copper crush washer. We have the oil change kits at the bottom of the link also.

Here is the Mann version , it does not come with a crush ring. You will need one per filter kit. Part # 11427622446

Hope that helps and gives you some options, changed both with no problems.

I know Detroit Tuned strongly recommends the OEM MINI filters.

I prefer Mann, but lately I've been using BMW. The BMW ones fit really tight.

We only use and recommend the OEM MINI filters. Often we find they are even cheaper than the local auto parts generic ones.
The aftermarket ones don't seem to match the OE specs so they are often taller/shorter/less filter material and so on. Go OEM and you won't go wrong

I couldn't really find anything decent at any of my local parts stores.

Best I found (had to use in a pinch) was a WIX at O'Reilly's. Some I've seen were actually made in Germany, but mine was made in Poland.

Autozone only had STP china made crap.

I was in a pinch so I picked up a Wix Filter locally on my last oil change. It is very well made and I have no reason to doubt it's any less reliable than OEM/Mann/Mahle. But it's also about twice the price of an OEM/Mann. So I ordered a 4-pack from WMW and have them for the next few changes. Sticking with OEM from now on.

Detroit tuned does my oil changes and says to stick to OEM only. I'll take their recommendations on prolonging my MINIs life. But try both and see if you notice any differences how the car runs.
