A roof rack mishap...
So I just finished racing in a duathlon this morning (came in 2nd - which is the only good thing about today so far) and after a 2 hour drive back home in the pouring rain, I was tired and on autopilot and forgot to stop and take my bike off my roof racks before backing into my garage....Needless to say, the garage roof did a very speedy job at removing both the bike, and the racks for me.
I haven't even completely assessed the situation because it was pouring, but the racks are toast and the bike wont even come off the racks. Also the force of the racks being ripped out of the roof did some nasty work to the roof (scratches, dents, etc). Bike might be toast too - I'm not sure which hurts more, the bike or the car :(
Oh well. I've had my eye on a new carbon bike anyway, so I guess I have the excuse to get one. I'll post pictures later, after I have a drink...

When I was living in a condo the couple that bought the unit next door did the same thing. They had two very expensive mountain bikes on the roof rack on their Range Rover and backed into their space in the carport and peeled the bikes right off. Are you insured?
Skip to :40, and this is basically what I did..
Considering I backed in, so the bike seat post hit first, I'm really surprised it ripped both the bike and the racks off in one fell swoop and didn't just snap the seat post. That really says something about the strength of both my bike and the rack mounting system.
I did notice some more damage not previously seen yesterday, it appears the rack must have hit the black plastic between the hood and the windshield (where the wipers are) and smash a foot long piece of plastic out.. I can see into the engine bay.
I do have insurance (car and home) so they'll be getting a call from me tomorrow. I'm most worried about the damage to the roof and where the racks mount in, because it looks like it sheered a little metal. I don't want and leaks into my roof.
You know what they say sh*t happens!

So here's a few photos. It's hard to get photos of the dented roof, but the right side of the car got it the worst. There's about a foot area where it's just near the right rear rack-mount where it's scratched and dented. That area is also the most torn up where the rack would mount into the roof - hard to get photos of it. The racks themselves are toast, twisted and bent. The fork-mounted bike holder, one piece is bent 90 degrees. As for the bike, the fork is bent as is the rear wheel. Surprisingly the carbon isn't cracked though!
