I'll tell you what Lot15 and Ministrone-

I did a check of existing databases, and found a source that features 770,000 Canadian records. It's too big and something I can't afford now, both in terms of infrastructure and starting costs, however, I will look into adding Canadian postal codes on an as needed basis.

So to start off, please PM me your city, province, postal code, in the same manner as we use for the US ZIP codes. If you know Longitude/Latitude for your city, even better, but if not, I'll see if I can locate it.

Then we can take it from there, ok?

A couple of announcements.

1.) The c3Club.org website is almost ready to be launched--which hosts this Motoring Registry. Once it's live, you will begin to see additional changes to the Registry over the next few weeks.

2.) I'm working with my web host to move the site to a different server that's more stable since this one has frozen on me twice this past week--had nothing to do with me.

3.) I've registered a new domain to make it easier to locate the tool.

http://www.FindaMotoringBuddy.com

**Updated 5/9/04**
My web host has agreed to move my site to a more stable and faster server, so access to the Finder will be locked for the next 12 to 24 hours. Hopefully less. Just wanted to give a heads up to anyone that was having trouble.

Richard

Ok, hopefully this is my final post on this subject.

I've made a new page to try to improve the quality of the registry, by flagging and removing anyone that hasn't verified their listing. I've noticed in some cases people providing incorrect email addresses like (earthlonk.net--an obvious misspelling)

If you happen to know anyone on this page, please let them know that if their name is displayed in RED, they will be purged from the database and will need to register. If they aren't in RED, they should still contact me, because I've been unsuccessful in getting a hold of them to verify their listing.

http://www.c3club.org/finder/incomplete.asp

Thanks!!!

You're welcome! I really want to get back to work on the tool, but I've been so busy with my VacuCams. We have 403 registrants in 42 states and 14 unconfirmed registrations. Not bad!

Motoring Finder is Almost Ready!!!!

We are up to 425 and 12 unconfirmed Motorers!!

This is just a reminder. Please check your SPAM FILTERS and Mailbox Filters and permit this email address:
FindaMotoringBuddy.com Automated Sender <MotoringBuddy@c3club.org>

Also please get familiar with your passwords and change them if needed. The final phase of FINDaMOTORINGbuddy.com is almost completed.

How does it work?

You need to login. If you don't login, you won't see any of the advanced features.

Once you are logged in, the system will greet you by name, and now you can perform your local searches.

You will notice checkboxes alongside the search results. You can check them all with the single checkbox at the top or select individual ones. Once you do this and Confirm the selections, you will be taken to a new page that asks you to describe the event you are planning. This might be as simple as a gathering at the local Starbucks.

Emails will be sent to the selected group.

When the email arrives, you have the option to click on the link to reply or click on a link to ignore this organizer so you won't be contacted by them in the future.

If you click to reply, you will be taken to the login page. This is why you need your info.

Once accepted, you can view the details and who's already signed up. Then you can reply with a menu pulldown, and a comment if you want, and you're done. The system won't allow you to RSVP more than once, although you will be able to change it up until the day of the event.

Everyone's info is kept confidential. We work with Public Names on the invitations only, and no personal information is given out, not even your email address.

I've temporarily disabled the email portion because it's currently set to send emails only to me. Nobody needs hundreds of test emails sent to them! But I also don't want thousands of test emails sent to me so I've temporarily turned this feature off.

Right now you can sign in, create an event, and check it out.

I still consider this app as BETA because there are some bugs left to squash, but I would like people to try it out.

The IGNORE feature is currently broken.

Thanks!

Richard Lin

Today the FindAMotoringBuddy.com app has launched

Today the FindAMotoringBuddy.com app has launched. I'm certain there will be bugs to squash, and certain compatibility issues to figure out, but in the limited testing I've done, the app works beautifully.

So go give it a shot, and try doing a search between 5 and 50 miles to see how many Motorers show up.

The steps to create an invite the motoring buddy's are simple.

1.) Log In
2.) Perform a search
3.) Select who you want to contact or select them all. Please limit your selections to 30 persons or less. I don't currently have a restriction on this, so please don't abuse it.
4.) Click the GO NEXT STEP

From the list that you selected, a new list is generated. It might be the same size or it might be smaller. If you've sent invitations before, and the recipients don't want to hear from you, they might be IGNORING YOU and they won't show up on your new list.

5.) Fill in the blanks for your event, be as detailed as possible.
6.) Click SEND INVITATIONS NOW

Your event will be added to the database, and emails will be sent to everyone on that list. They will be notified that you are requesting to go motoring and they can REPLY or Ignore you.

When you view your CONTROL PANEL, your event will be there, and you can see who has replied.

Hope that makes sense!

Experiencing Problems???

I received an email from a Motoring Buddy today that he was having problems. After looking over his inquiry, I realized what went wrong. Please update your bookmarks.

To access the Motoring Registry, go to http://www.c3club.org

Use the Login link on the upper right to login, or perform a search from the appropriate link. I would highly recommend logging in first, so you can see the new features.

I still have the original Finder which is about 5 times SLOWER and doesn't have any of the contact features enabled, which is part of the confusion.

The new login page is also here:

Strange Emails????

Today after sending out a bunch of Motoring Finder Notification emails, I realized that my emails were some how getting messed up. Fortunately I found out the problem and solved it, so in case you experienced some problems today, that's what happened. My apologies for the emails.

No harm was done, just a bunch of repeated lines of text!

Registration Problems with AOL

If you are using AOL for your primary email address with the Motoring Database or have sent emails to the Admin and haven't received any replies, please make sure you are NOT using AOL.

AOL has blocked all email activity from c3club.org and we are not able to send email to AOL accounts.

We're working on getting them to release our domain, but at this point, it is an AOL problem and the only solution for you is to get a free email account from Yahoo or Hotmail or other free email provider and use that instead of AOL.

We're sorry about the inconvenience but there is nothing else that can be done. This is a very common problem with AOL email accounts as they try to weed out spammers.

Martyn C., if you are reading this, I got your emails, but your confirmations and my own emails to you are being rejected.

It might be a good idea to add Canadian postal codes. I now live in Montreal and all my MINI buddies are in Toronto.

thanks

Yeah that's on my list of things to do. I actually spent a week in Toronto a couple weeks ago, and was amazed at how much it reminded me of Los Angeles. LOL

Cool Map of Motoring Database Users

I just put this page together today. It's a realtime map generator of all the registrations on the Motoring Database. It's being generated in realtime using a tool supplied by the government called Tiger Map.

The page works by matching up all the registered ZIP codes to the database of Longitude/Latitude info. This is then written to a text file, which the Tiger Map server reads and creates a map out of it. That's why there may be a delay when viewing the link.

http://www.c3club.org/2/finder/showmap.asp

Thanks to GBMINI for the tip!

It's pretty interesting that the majority of the registrations are from the MidWest to East Coast, with heavy concentration on the West Coast but gets pretty sporadic as you move out.
