Ok what I discovered is that my app is a little confused between ZIPs with 5 digits and ZIPS with a 0 prefix as in 02446.

The current solution is to enter in both the search and your registration only the 4 digits after the first 0.

I've fixed everyone who has registered up to this point, so no need to change it if you registered this morning.

**CLOVER**
Thanks CLo! Hahah, yeah that would be pretty cool! Now if we can only find a way to get people to know this tool exists!!! Hmm, business cards! Time to make some business cards and put them on every MINI I see!

Damn cool idea OctaneGuy. 1 quick suggestion, instead of having New MINI and Classic Mini as radio buttons (can only select 1), why not make them checkboxes for those people who have 1 (or more) of each?

Now if there were just some other MINIs within 250 miles of me, I'd have someone to hang out with!

I don't think I'm in. I have a 0 as first digit. I'll give it another go.

Has anyone checked the mileage reported at this site from your location to another? I checked the mileage of the MINI reported closest to me (301.4) and compared it to MapQuest (371.9), Yahoo (397.0). What's up with that?

Charles, is there a 301-mile-long, absolutely straight road from you to the destination in question?

Thanks Teampajn!! We got 37 registrations in about 12 hours, so I'd say we're doing pretty good!!

Agro--Good idea!! I'll make that change!

Maxamini-- I modified your listing ZIP so it should be ok now!

CharlesWil- MapQuest and Yahoo should be calculating the DRIVING DISTANCE along known roads. My app is using ZIP Code regions and is measuring linear distance, whether it's possible or not to get from Point A to Point B. =) That should explain why it's a shorter distance--nothing shorter than a line between 2 points.

Whenever I try a search I get the error message:

"Your postal code was not found in our current table."

My zip is 07980

Try 7980

There is an issue right now with ZIP codes that begin with a 0. I'm working on it.

Oh ok! It took me awhile to find it on your site. Great job. Yep, works in a similar way except as opposed to having it be a function of a forum, I had plans to make this into the whole reason people visit. Funny I read an article in the LA Times talking about how Google and the search engines were just realizing how important it was to build localized and regional searches that would get people to locations near them. Guess I'm on the right track.

Another reason that Mapquest will show different distances is that a zip code is measured from the "home" post office for that zip code.

So before the big, stupid, preposterous BMW litigation crap rained down upon the MINI community, I was a BMWCCA member (no flaming, please!). They used to (and probably still do) publish a brochure called "Friends of BMW," or something suitably bourgeois. It was/is a listing of CCA members who could offer things like garage space, spare parts, accommodations if need be, and mechanical expertise (and all the combinations therein, at varying levels of know-how) for traveling BMW motorists. Wouldn't it be cool to do something like that, but even better?

I think this is a great start - I registered yesterday.

Thanks Marty! I didn't know something like that existed. But most definitely, that's what I wanted to do. Essentially, I wanted to be able to unite all the MOTORing friendly MINI's, and make it easy to get together. That's first and foremost the priority of this registry. Secondary will be to unite the services and favored stops throughout the country and make it easily accessible.

We got 56 registrations now which is cool!

Haha, well it's FIXED in the sense you can do your search. Just ignore the 0. I've removed the 0's from the DB.....Doh!!!! it just occured to me where the problem is.
Hahaaha, it's sooooo simple.

I just checked the US ZIP code database and noticed all the ZIPs with a starting of 0 are missing it--that's why no comparison is found.

Sooooo, let me see if I can reimport the DB with the correct ZIP. I'll post it when it's fixed.

But just so you know, it IS working right now, you just gotta leave off the 0.

Richard

OK!!! By Popular Demand from the East Coasters, the preceding 0 problem is HISTORY. I corrected all the entries in the database, so no need to fix your ZIP codes. So now you can enter the proper Zip code i.e 01036 instead of 1036 for searching!!!

The missing ZIP codes will still be an issue, but I've added all the ZIP codes that people have posted in the Missing Zip code page. The most recent additions were already in the database, but because they had started with a 0, people thought they didn't exist!

Anyhow, that's all history!! So go play east coasters!!! Oh wait, it's 2AM your time, you must all be in bed by now!

*****
Quick Update. Anyone that's registered or added to the Missing Zip Code registry--I'm doing the updates about as fast as they come in. So be sure to check it a couple hours after you register.
