Drill hole in exhaust tips?

This relates to the black soot residue on the Mini exhaust tips. Has anyone tried drilling drain holes in the bottom of the exhaust tips so the black goop will drain out the bottom?

Why? It won't work.

Just a guess.

Mind you I know very little. But I am guessing that the black goop is really smoke soot from the exhuast and not a liquid so it won't drip. The soot builds up slowly. I may be way off base.

A better idea is just clean it. Get some Super Clean and then a green scotch bright and clean it. Works for me.

i do clean it. I just thought there might be a solution to keep from having to clean it.
You said drilling the holes won't work. You didn't answer my question "Why won't it work?"

Because it is soot not a fluid. So there would be no draining it.

I have noticed that the "soot" that blacks the lower portion of the exhaust tips comes from the condensation when I first start. The condensation carries the soot and it drips down causing the black on the chrome. If the soot was not a liquid or not carried by a liquid I would think the whole tip would black out. I use purple power and a scouring pad it comes right off as long as you clean regularly.

You can try, but i don't think it will work since the soot coats the entire exhaust opening. It might help in preventing the concentrated buildup of soot on the bottom of the opening, but you will still have to clean them. I usually just give it a wipe during the weekly wash, using nothing special, and it looks fine for a few days. I imagine if you wash it twice a week, the soot will never be more than slightly visible.

The water that condenses in the exhaust system mixes with soot and that's what's dripping out the exhaust tips leaving the black residue.

In my OEM tips there is a hold in the bottom already. I don't clean my tips as I don't mind the matte black finish of full soot...death to chrome.

Exhaust Soot

Maybe that's why my jcw tip and my other mini's sport tip are originally colored black around the hole so you wont see it.

The exhaust tips aren't chrome, they're stainless steel.

I was referring to anything shiny. I think the pipes are SS, but what about the tips? What grade SS is it?

Sure it does, it's not supposed to but depending or grade and quality it surely does rust, especially with built up carbon deposits and random iron particles captured on it.

Collinite Metal Wax works great too. It is made for marine use.

I've had the same bottle for 5 years I bet. You can get it at Amazon or Marine places.

I buffed the tips on my MINI with sandpaper and spray painted them with barbecue paint, which withstands the heat; a tip I got from terryg. Soot? What soot? It’s all black.

I just painted my new VIP exhaust tips with 1200 degree black engine paint. Problem solved.

Much like Jbobp.
