A Bad Idea

Never drive a go fast go-cart then drive your MINI. You will be kinda of depressed. I went to Andretti Go Cart track here in Melbourne, Fl last night. I have been here a couple of times before. Its been a few years since I have been there to race around in the carts. The last time I was there it was still pretty new. Well its been open around 10 years and the carts are a little wore out which was a bummer but, I was talking to my buddy that I was hanging out with and he lets me know that there is a track in the back with 40mph carts. So we decided to fork over the extra price for a ride in these carts. They give you a brief before you even get on the track and give you a head sock for the helmet that is required to be worn. Well these carts were freaking awesome. They had the power to slide the corners if you gave it too much gas and they had hydraulic brakes so if you gave it too much brake it would spin around. I had a blast and would love to go do it again but, 10 bux a pop is a little too much. Well we decided to head out and head somewhere else. Well when I got in the MINI (mind you this is about 5 minutes later) it definitely accelerates quicker it just doesn't feel like it and with the Sport button on the steering feels to light. I was losing my mind it through everything out of whack with how I felt driving my MINI. So just a word of advice to all the MINI drivers out there in MINI land, Do Not Drive Your MINI After Driving A Fast Go Cart!!

Sounds like you need to buy a T-Rex to drive to and from those go-kart tracks.

I did one of those cart tracks as part of the local Mini Takes the States run (and it was such a blast, I am definitely going back to to it again). When I got back in the MINI to go home, I gotta say, while it didn't feel quite as go-cartish as it did on the trip up, it still felt pretty good. In fact I remember thinking, 'damn, this thing DOES handle like a go-cart'. But I did find myself having to loosen my grip on the wheel and resist the urge to hug the apex of every corner within a fraction of an inch from the curb!

When I went from 3+ hours karting and got back into my MINI, the first thing I did was almost put the car into a curb because I'd gotten used to having to muscle around the kart with no power steering. Until I got used to it again, the power steering in the MINI made it feel like a 1980s Cadillac!

LOL

Wind it up on any PC racing game and then drive any real car right afterwards; it will feel slow, heavy, clunky and, well, boring.

This is a timely thread. I just got back in the door from having run karts at Summit Point. It's an outdoor track and the karts are quite fast. Well I karted from 1pm till 10pm and just like was said above, my MINI felt like an old Cadillac! I also found myself haulin' **** in the MINI as first because it was so smooth. I had to keep watching the speedo rather than "feeling" how fast I was going.

If anyone lives close enough to Kart at Summit Point, I highly recommend it.

go cart

This is my go cart for the street (and trackday)... the mini feels plush after driving this. But it's hard to beat a mini for day in, day out driving.

Mondo, it reminds me a lot of my Lotus 7's (an A and super Cosworth Ford). Unfortunately my 73 year old back will no longer allow go-karting.

Hey Porthos,

I live in Titusville and have never been to that track. I've heard about it and want to go. I was in two car shows this weekend and got word of a monthly autocrossing event in Orlando. I'm planning on attending and possibly entering next month. You should check it out.

Autocrossing! I need to get more info, I will post here if you're interested. I need to make a couple calls tomorrow. It's by the Orlando International Airport.

As a comparison to go karts, I went to a friend's house in Hellertown, PA this past weekend. We took some four-wheelers up to a coal mine. Man, what fun it is. My 3rd time riding out, and I got to drive a big Grizzly 660cc. Drive one of those and then get back in your MINI. You'll think it's night and day. And, yes, my MINI felt slow on the way home.

Hate to say it, but that is why I bought my MINI..

Someone threw me a set of keys to an MCS in April 2002 and I took it for a short spin. I then got back into my previously perfectly fine 86 Honda CRX, and it wouldn't go, stop or turn. Two weeks later, I was at the dealership begging them to sell me a car..
