I'm not an owner but I'm driving a loaner 2010 S with an automatic. I must say I'm impressed and I take back most of the bad stuff I've said about automatic owners

I really like the automatic downshifts while slowing for a corner or stop sign. I've had it for two weeks now and it's never been out of Sport mode.

 

Yep that's pretty cool. Now push the stick to the left in M and now try shifting in manual mode. It will stay in gears that you've selected, but should you come to a stop, the engine won't quit as it will downshift for you.

I think if the Auto had that "neck jerking" feel as you row through the gears (that all manuals do), the Auto would feel about as close to a manual as you could possibly get, but instead the gear changes are super smooth, so as you accelerate hard, and upshift, you don't get that same sense as you would with a manual.

Try drive around in auto, then flip it to manual, and downshift for the turns....you really won't miss the manual, lol.

Short version - lifetime fluid ain't. At least not for those of us who beat the h3ll outta the tranny. And fluid replacement can make a huge difference in tranny performance after extended high abuse driving.

never really understood the "other" types of paddles that are single function: left for upshifts, right for downshifts. Are these for people whose left hands think independently from their right hands?

altho we get dissed by those who prefer it that way, I like the MINI Steptronic system, since I like doing all my ups und downs with my left hand. Just makes more sense...

had A new Sooby Outback rental and it had paddles set up the "other" way--but no manual stick mode like we have. man I was confused for a couple days. Yet I have to admit: going with those paddles was the only way I could keep up with my lead-foot friend and her 05 MCS.

Hey all.... I know there are a number of graphic designers lurking around NAM, and with over 130 members of MINI AuTOs, I've been thinking we deserve our own "badge" or logo. Anyone want to give it a go?

Having had some training in graphic design myself (a few lifetimes ago), about the only thing I can think of that visually distinguishes us from our stick-shifting bretheren/sistren are the paddle shifters... but to my eye they don't exactly make for a compelling design device.

That's a nice idea. I also know that the stick has a +/- on it. That might be an idea as well.

 

How about using the steering wheel from the center up with the tach and the paddle shifters and below it fade into the no left peddle. Just the gas brake and foot rest no clutch

just a friendly warning to all my auto-head friends out there: there's a poster on NAM named richardsperry who loves to dis auto owners and jab them any way he can. For example, on one thread about how to change ATF in the Aisin, he chimed in with some smart **** remark about how happy he was not to be an "autotragic" owner. My worst side took hold, and I fought back, mostly because I have two veteran friends who drive auto MINIs because they lost their left legs serving our country. and I know others that have disabilites that preclude them from manual ownership.

Then there are some of us that simply prefer automatics, for whatever reason.

I have repeatedly reported his snide and pseudo-clever comments to our mods, and I urge all of you to do the same if you see his anti-automatic posts--you will know them, because they add NOTHING to the discussion at hand. All he does is stir the pot and create a wider rift between us and the stickies. He is but one reason I do not spend much time on NAM anymore. Cheers to all,

 

on a much more positive note, how about a 1-6 shift graphic like U see atop the shifter, and a diagonal line thru it?
