New iPhone app - MINI Link

I just came accross a new iPhone app from MINI USA called MINI Link. Looks like it was just added yesterday. It's basically a map app that shows nearby minis, events and hotspots.

I think it could be pretty awesome if they get more hotspots like all night cafes and maybe even motoring routes. Anyway, it's free, so definitley worth checking out. Gives me something to do while I'm waiting for my mayfair.

Wow, this is actually cool once more of us use it. Apparently it detects when other MINI owners in your area and sends a "digital wave". No more of that feeling of rejection with the physical wave!

Nice job, MINI. This app really leverages the strengths of the iPhone. Wish, however, MINI would integrate existing social functionality they've already developed in the Owners Lounge, such as Motoring ID. Perhaps this will come in time.

I live in an area where there aren't a lot of MINIs. Can't wait to hear feedback about this app from some MINI/iPhone owners in MINI-dense areas like some cities in California, for example.

This is an amazing little app, I'm so excited to see it work -- unfortunately it keeps telling me my VIN is invalid, so I can't use it.

Anybody else run into this yet? Hopefully it'll get sorted out, can't wait to use it fully.

It's saying my '10 VIN is invalid too, the Motoring Assistance application says the same (it didn't recognize my '08 VIN either, harumph). Also, I noticed there's no Laser Blue color choice in MINI Link?! You better believe I sent MINI USA some feedback through their site about that!

My '10 went through with the Motoring app, but not this. Not sure what different database it would be pulling from, so it's gotta be programming error of some kind.

Also what's kind of funny, this one links you to a description/info page on miniusa.com, which of course is purely flash based, and of course ... doesn't work on an iPhone, which the program... dun dun dunnnn, is running on. A few little logical flaws in the thought process there, but good work none the less, I can't wait to see the program working fully. Should be very fun.

Just downloaded this app today. It's awesome! My '03 R50 VIN was accepted with no problems as well.

Only thing I did find, is despite the fact that I live in a city with a million people, and there are literally hundreds of MINIs on the road, I can't seem to find any on my map. Perhaps *no-one* else in the city is using the app? Maybe its a Canadian thing who knows?

There is a very large concentration of MINIs around here, and there were still no MINIs on the map apart from ours. I don't think many owners have got the ap yet, and I assume you have to be running it for the location stuff to work.

I think it was just added to the app store last week, and I haven't seen MINI advertise it. Maybe they're holding off for some initial testing before the really start pushing it.

I assume the app has to be running in order for it to show up on the map. I think they purposely make it show your location only if you want people to know where you are.

Valid point. Thats the likely reason no other MINIs show up....

Ok, down loaded this app today. It shows where all the MINI dealers are and a lot of hotspots but sofar my MINI seems to be the only one shows up. I even zoomed out on the map and no one se shows up.
At least it was free. Let's see if it improves as owned sign on.

OK, I think I get it now. You have to have the app open at the time to get any info on others in the area, and if the app is closed on your phone you cannot be seen. Meanwhile I have a life to live and actually use my phone for *gasp* other things.

In other words, the implementation isn't very good. Too bad the iPhone doesn't allow processes to run in the background.

Even better would be to let the iPhone auto-run apps if there is a particular Bluetooth device (IE MINI bluetooth) present. This would allow it to only run when you are actually in the car. Of course having it run in the background would be nice too because sometimes I text and drive.

I was out doing errands yesterday and ended up driving by the local Mini dealer. I had this app running when I went by the dealership and...nothing.

On the bright side, I had to edge into stopped traffic on the highway yesterday and another Mini owner let me in! Thanks!

I've had this app for a few days now -- it should be mandatory for mini and iphone owners!

I dropped a few power pellets in manhattan, enjoy getting them :-P

I got MINI liquid assets a long time ago. I'm curious about this MINI link.
