Stupid MINI driver... makes us all look bad

We were heading east on I-40 Friday night across AZ when a PW MINI cut us off. My wife was driving and passing a truck when the MINI apparently felt we weren't passing fast enough. He passed us on the right then shot in front, barely missing our right front fender. The part that really angered me was that he wasn't even in a hurry...once passing us he dawdled and forced my wife to cancel the cruise control and slow down significantly. Once passed the truck she re-engaged the CC and the MINI passed us and was passed by us multiple times without us ever changing speeds.

Good thing I wasn't driving...I'm less forgiving of highway bozos than my wife is.

Wouldn't have been so angry except it was the second time that night. Holidays make people do crazy stuff...

Sorry to go off topic, but...

You know what, I read the thread title and I felt the same exact way today. Only what made me think "Stupid MINI driver...makes us all look bad" was that I saw these on a PW/B MC on 287 by Outerbridge Crossing heading to GSP South:

They just looked plain silly

Anyway, just like both of our experiences , regardless of the car there are human beings behind each and every wheel out there, so there are inevitably going to be ***holes (and clowns) out there, wherever you go. Best to just drive defensively and brush it off, especially during holiday season.

Must be I-40

I've had the same thing happen to me a couple of times on I-40, but not with MINIs. Just cruising down the freeway then apparently some cars I pass don't like it. Then they come around to get in front, only to slow down. I have cruise control on, maintaining a constant speed, and these morons don't like a little car to pass them!

Idiots drive any type of car/brand, including your favorite ones. Passing on the right should be a punishable offense.

Yikes I'm sorry, I knew I should have kept my mouth shut

And this is your thread so... I won't say anymore except, different strokes for different folks, also applies to the way people drive. Not to make any excuses for the idiot you encountered but too many times people let their emotions run wild while driving. It's stupid, it's also human nature.

I'm not sticking up for the guy for passing on the right and I will agree the right is for traveling and left for passing. That said on a recent trip from NH to Florida I was just amazed at how many people travel in the left lane. I had no choice but to pass in the right lane. It seemed most people would get on the highway and immediately get into the left lane and stay there. The worst area for this seemed to be I-81 in Virginia.

It's been quite a few years since I have taken a long distance trip. I never recall people to be such bad drivers though, especially in the south. At some points there would be me and a truck in the right lane and a huge line of cars in the left lane with nobody passing because of the gridlock this caused.

I am guilty of passing on the right for numerous occassions.

In Raleigh, it seems like the left lane is the slow cruising lane and they drivers will never move over.

I just stay in the right and pass most drivers but will give plenty of room if I need to change lanes from someone pulling in from the on-ramp.

I had a car tailgate me on I-565 in Alabama. When I moved over, they passed, got in the right-hand lane and slowed. So, I passed them and they repeated the process. I was about to get pissed when they passed a third time, slowed next to me and the dad honked as a couple of teenage girls waved through a rolled-down pax window.

Apparently, the kids were MINI-freaks. I returned the greetings and we were then all on our separate ways.

Have had several other experiences similar, though not quite as nice, with people acting strangely on the road that I now chalk-up to a possible fascination with my car.

Traveling on the Pennsylvania Turnpike quite often, I find that sometimes the lanes are reversed and all the slow people end up in the left lane and the fast people end up in the right lane. I will admit I do pass in the right lane sometimes-but only because some people don't pay attention and sit in the left lane going like 10 mph below the speed limit and don't move over when I flash them.

In OR/WA we have posted signs "Slower Vehicles Keep Right"...you think that helps, NO!!! I will pass any vehicle going slower than the posted speed limit with regard to safety and weather conditons. I'm often the one with CC on and being passed at 35mph in a posted "25mph"...where are the COPS when you need them.

Yeah, sounds like he was try to play car tag. It annoys the hell out of me when people do that. My general rule for the interstates here in KY is that you get to pass me ONCE with no penalty. If I pass you back, you don't get to pass me again. (There are a few exceptions.)

Generally, I agree. But in Kentucky, the drivers are bass ackwards. Apparently, in this state, turn signals have been outlawed (either that or Chevy and Ford don't put turn signals on their trucks) and the right lane IS the passing lane.

Making it possible to pass on the right is a punishable offence in a lot of places, unfortunately its not enforced enough.

Florida just recently added a law about 'slower traffic ~ keep right'

(Connecticut is the only State I recall to enforce that law).

Drivers who intend to make a left turn like the left lane for a few miles before the turn.

Often, the pavement is smoother in the left lane as well.

So, right lane passing is still quite common and it is not addressed in the law.

In CT it is legal to passing on the right as long as it is on a highway with 3 or more travel lanes in each direction. This does not include "climbing lanes" used by slow vehicles climbing hills. But that is a whole other story.

In europe they use the expression "Drive right", which means that one should always drive in the right lane unless one is actively passing, and they enforce it, religiously.

It would be nice if there were better driver education requirements and better enforcement of some of the existing laws. Speaking of enforcement of the laws, can we make a citizens arrest when we see a member of the law enforcement community talking on their cell phone while driving?
