Looking for a quality dealer

I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but here goes.....

I used to have a 2005 MCS which I loved to death! I made the mistake of selling to get a 2008 CPO Porsche Cayman S (not sure what I was thinking) only has 7000 miles + is for the most part loaded. After driving the Porsche for a few days, I realized how much I missed my Mini . I had contact the only dealer in the state where I live and was almost insulted as to what I was offered on my trade.....as a new vehicle, it was stickered close to 80K, and I was only offered 45K on a trade....I realize the economy isn't the greatest right now, but that is almost a 50% loss....

I am looking for a dealer that might be able to offer me closer to 60K towards a trade....if anyone out there knows of a reasonable dealer or if there are any dealers out there looking for a sale, I am looking for a 2009 CS (still deciding between a hardtop and convert).

If this is the wrong forum, I apologize in advance.

Thx

First, where are you? That might help.

Second, not a bad choice of forums, though perhaps the forum group for your geographic region might be of more assistance. Or you could post in the Coupe 07+ section.

Best of luck! I sure hope you get a better offer than 45k. That's pretty insulting, for sure.

Thanks for the post! I am in Tucson, Arizona and am willing to drive up to 1000 miles to make a transaction. I realize that it is a bit difficult for dealers to give an exact $$$ without seeing the vehicle, but we should be able to be in the same ballpark before I hit the road (or have it shipped )

You could always try Ralph Schomp in Denver (Littleton, really). They're the only dealer in Colorado and an MSRP seller. http://www.ralphschompmini.com/ Good luck!

MSRP= Manufacture's Suggested Retail Price and a lot of dealers will want to add on "Market Adjustment" and sell above that price.

Not just MINIs, but any high demand model in short supply will often suffer this 'adjustment'.

With the state of the Economy, you could usually expect to be able to pay less than MSRP,
especially for inventory cars at the end of a month.

maybe this might be true back East where there are many MINI dealers, but out here in the West (where the OP lives, and where dealers are scarce) msrp is still the norm because demand still exceeds supply. what are starting to disappear in this economy are the markups above msrp.

man OP were U low-balled on that trade offer!

The problem is you are trying to trade-in essentially a current model year car, the largest depreciation hit is always in the first year. Even if the MINI dealer can offer you a "deal" on their new car, it's not going to be enough for you not to take a big hit on the Cayman. My suggestion would be to ride it out for a year or two, or just bend over.

Thanks for all of your replies I know that I will take a hit on the vehicle, but I am hoping that since it is stickered for close to 75K, I should be able to get 55K or so for it....I can only hope....

Keep the Porsche until the economy settles down, and you should be able to do better.

BTW, what do you miss about the MINI????

Problem is Caymans don't command sticker price. In most parts of the country, 10% or more is doable so the wholesale price now has little to do with what MSRP was. I got mine new in '06 for 12% off of MSRP. (PS, Porsche has a lot higher percentage markup than most car makers. It's about 14% on base price and 17% on options. BMW/MINI is more like 8% markup on the total MSRP versus invoice.)

davisflyer - I miss the handling and nimbleness of the Mini. Just for driving around town (the roads in Tucson are not the best ), the Cayman gets tiring very quickly....I did have someone inquire, so I might be able to sell outright for what I paid for it...

mtbscott...I realize that mark-up is a bit high, but even at 20% off MSRP, I am looking at about 60K....The offer that I received was almost 40% off MSRP which is kind of nutty....

I am just going to keep my fingers crossed that I can sell....either that or I will have to keep it in the garage and enjoy my motorcycle for the time being

You were lowballed because used car sales are THE number one revenue and profit source for any car dealership, and they smelled a nice hefty profit on that Cayman. If I were U id keep it.
