Awesome, I got rear ended
I concur on the vigilante justice. That's only going to come back on you.
I guess one thing you could do (just thought it up have not
thought it through) you make his driving your new hobby.
You know where he lives. Follow him to the bar and wait,
then call 911 when he gets on the road. This will take quite a bit
of time and energy out of your life. But most places now
3 DWIs is a felony, with jail time, and loss of DL for life.
(I just said most places to sound good, at least in NC it is)

Big hole in this theory is they will just drive without a license. Happens all the time. Can't tell you how many news stories I have read about people who have multiple DUI's but keep driving even though they have no insurance, no license and expired registration. No stopping some of these aholes.
When Gromit got rear ended last March, he was in the shop about a week and a half. Came out like new.
Just make sure the shop has all the parts at hand before taking your car in. There will be some bits they'll have to get as the go along, plastic clips and whatnots.

The revenge is only a dream which after giving it time to settle in, is not something any logical person would do. You never know who you are dealing with.
The sad part is that it takes a huge accident for these people to wake up. I've called the Police on a few people I've seen on the roads obviously drunk out of their minds. By the time it gets relayed and an officer is on location, the driver is has already been home. Hopefully technology will develope to help police zero in on drunks quickly and prevent accidents.

Deja Vu. I had the exact same experience happen to me a few years back (not in my MINI). I was stopped in a line of track at a light. It was raining. I look in the rear view and see a big boat of a car barrelling toward me. I hear the guy slide for a millisecond then...wham...He wacks me at about 20 mph. I had my seatbelt on but I still pitched forward. I instantly felt pain in my shoulder and neck, but I'll admit, I hammed it up a bit for the cops when they arrived a few minutes later. I got to ride in an ambulance for the first, and I hope only, time in my life.
After getting all my x-rays done and getting wrapped up a bit a cop shows up at the hospital to get my driver's info and report the incident. It turns out that the geezer that hit me "forgot" to re-up his auto insurance. The cop said that they were going to go over and arrest the guy that night.
The next day I called the cop to get an update. He tells me that the old fart threatened to kill himself when they showed-up at his place. He started crying and talking nonsense. They decide not to press charges! It turns out the guy is a "distinguished" WWII vet. In fact, he was the most heavily decorated hero of the war net to Audie Murphy. He was one medal, the Medal of Honor, behind Murphy! The guy's a freakin' legend. Maybe I could understand his allowing the insurance to lapse. He was probably undergoing some rough times, but the guy never ever called me or the cops to check on my condition. When I sent him a totally inoffensive letter asking him to call me so we could at least try to rectify my emergency room bills as well as the $2500 worth of damage to my RAV4, he never called back. My insurance company spent almost a year trying to get in touch with the guy, but they could never reach him - phone disconnected and he wouldn't answer the door. Meanwhile, every Veteran's Day and Memorial Day this joker is on TV hobnobbing with the politicians, including the President himself!
After three months of rehab my partially torn labrum was deemed better. After having my lawyer buddy threaten the cops for never pursuing any action against this key - not even revoking his license when he doesn't have insurance - I gave up. My insurance company also gave up and wrote the whole thing off as a loss. My insurance paid all my bills and the my car was repaired well enough for me to trade it on something else, but next time my premium came up, my bill skyrocketed. I forget the exact amount but it was painful. I immediately switched to GEICO.
Fast forward three years. The guy that hit me died and almost had a bridge named after him. He's still a local smalltown hero. Then my original insurnace company contacts me demanding I pay them for $1500. They claim they overpaid me and that they hadn't been collecting enough from me on my premium. In other words, they were retroactively charging me for my coverage three years after the fact.
Long story made a wee bit shorter - my lawyer buddy responds to their letter with more legal posturing. After months of back and forth nasty letters, he tells them that they have been dealing in bad faith. That they have not adhered to Pennsylvania insurance regs, blah, blah, blah. Next thing I know, they are offering me $17,500 as a settlement. I still don't know what we were settling, but I took my money and ran. I now have a brand new Amish shed and have paid my daughter's first semester at Temple.
Moral of the story? You should've flopped around inside your car like a gaffed sturgeon until the cops arrived.
Seriously, document EVERYTHING. And make sure this clown has up to date coverage. And don't let your own insurance mess with you. If they try to raise your rate, call an attorney. It wasn't your fault. You're lucky your airbags didn't deploy because somehow that really screws up your future insurance bills.

I'd take the old man to court, but I'm leaving for USMC basic in less than 3 weeks.
You can contact your state's Motor Vehicle Department to get address information for the registered owner.
Sorry that this happened to you - I know the situation all too well.
William
Same thing happen to me last Feb. It was winter in Boston, fresh layer of snow. Driving on a two lane road next to no traffic. Came up to a red light behind a big UPS truck. Saw a big car on my rear view mirror coming in behind me. Everything happened so fast within a second. My thoughts was: "damn, he's going too fast to slow down in time." So I flip-flopped to the left lane and pulled up next to the UPS truck and then in less than 2 seconds. *Crunch* Could have been me.
It was a jeep.

Mini Update:
Got the police report back today, turns out the car doesn't have insurance.... I have to pay the $500 deductible to get her fixed back to normal. I'm leaving for USMC basic in 13 days, I don't have the time or the money for expenses like this... I'll try to get an OEM Aero rear bumper if possible, it can't cost that much more than the regular bumper. The thought of my car being at some body shop is freaking me out though, this is my baby.
So mad.

I need nine more NAM members to step up to he plate and donate to this future Marine so he has one less worry as he heads off to basic training.
Who's joining me?
Jurrell, PM me with a paypal email address. I'm serious, no scam!
Oh I forgot. That long discourse.
PA is a no fault state. I'm not sure what that means.
(My wife's mom lives there)
It's different in a fault and no fault state.
(not sure of the difference)
I mean for that check for $17.5 large.

I'll do my best to scrounge the money together, I might have to get the 45k service, oil change, and change my brake pads and rotors on hold until I come back in late January.
Thanks again for the offer though, it shows there are good people still out there.

Haha, thanks!
Mini update part 2:
I had a body shop look at my car today. He said i'm def. going to need a new oem bumper, so i threw in 'could you look up how much a difference would that be if you were to get an aero bumper instead?' he went onto his computer and came back a few minutes later and said around $20 over the regular bumper. I was expecting around $150, so i made the
face. Of course thats not including the mesh screens, but heck, thats one sweet deal! He'll email me the estimate by tonight and if he can grab an aero bumper. Things are looking up!

Again, thank you for your service, and good luck to you.
If you arrange a paypal I think there are a lot of people here
that would give a little.
If that doesn't work out in time just to let you know when
you go to the military and stay on base like you will be doing
you end up with a lot of money. Because you basically have
zero expenses. It's a good way to get ahead.
I congratulate you for such a great decision.
