Awesome, I got rear ended

RANT

Light turns red, I stop, 15 seconds or so go by, then I see headlights coming up on my rear really fast. I'm thinking "oh sh*t", then BAM, he hits me.

I was like "oh my god, this isn't happening to me." I step out of the car and I yellto the idiot, "pull in to that Exxon station". We pull up, he gets out, he's a older man in his 60's, he seemed oblivious to what happened, then he mumbles something about his brakes locking up because of the rain (it had just started drizzling and I didn't hear him lock up his wheels).
I ask him for his info, he says "I lives right down the street, so follow me."
I was thinking, 'Yeah. No. I don't want to get stabbed." So I tell him, "I'd rather us stay at the gas station." But then he hops in his car and slowly takes off. I get into my car and follow him, we park and he says he has to get something from his apartment. I was like, "no wait here for the police", I ask him what his address is, he mumbles something and wouldn't repeat it clearly. So I run to a neighbor near by and ask where this complex is at.
The guy walks into his apartment, I wait for the cops.
15 minutes later, 2 police cars come up. I say the guy went into his apartment and they go up to get him. The guy doesn't answer the door. 30 minutes go by and he doesn't answer the door. The police get my info and give me the police report number. I'm going to deal with insurance tomorrow.

I still can't believe this happened, all I want to do is keep my car nice and stuff like this happens. This is going to kill my resale value, all because some *** decided to drive under the influence (that's what I'm guessing, since he was hiding from something). My baby is hurting and I hate my life.

/RANT

My car:

His car:

The exhaust bent down and that bowed out the heat shield and whatever else is down there. The body is rubbing the rear passenger wheel and the bumper is toast. On another note, I was thinking of replacing my rear bumper due to some minor scuffs... but not like this, not like this at all.

He did get the short end of the stick, but my car's still hurt.

Those button things are parking distance sensors.

Sorry that happened to you, but on the plus side, things like the exhaust, heat shield, and bumper cover/supports are all "remove and replace" parts. As long as the body shop isn't having to repair/repaint the quarter panels or straighten the chassis, there's no reason why your car shouldn't come out of this literally as good as new. My entire front bumper was repainted at the VDC because of a small scratch, and I didn't even know about it until I saw a note in my vehicle history file 18 months later, and I'm real good about noticing repaints/bodywork.

I'd hold on to those pictures (and possibly take some more from all angles), so that if you go to sell the car and the accident shows up on CarFax, you can show the prospective buyer how limited the damage really was.

Wow, my condolences. That blows. Glad you're okay and your car isn't messed up any worse than it is. Best of luck with the cops and insurance.

That's a little load off of my chest. I'll definitly take some more pictures in the morning. Thank you for the very helpful information!

I am so sorry that this happened to you! Did the police finally get the guy out of his apartment? When you spoke with him at the gas station, did he appear/smell intoxicated in any way? Thank goodness for insurance!!

The police know where he lives, so hopefully he gets what's coming to him. He stumbled around just a little bit at the gas station and it took him like 5 minutes to back into an empty spot. I wanted to stay at the gas station, but I didn't want to physically restrain him.

I hope you learned a valuable lesson here.

That is to just stay where you are at when it happens, so it becomes a hit and run if they leave the scene. I can all but garantee you that the guy had been drinking, and that is why he wanted to get into his residence so he did not have to answer his door and get busted for it. They can not break down a door for anything less than a Felony, and even then I am not sure they can forcibly remove a person from their house unless it is a certain level of Felony. I am pretty sure a hit and run warants a forceful removal though.

Good luck to you and your MINI, Bro!

What a rotten thing to have happen. Hope your insurance covers it all, and that the police throw the book at the bastard.

Glad you are OK.

You're right - your resale value is now killed.

I bet you end up settling through your own insurance

Although you have a police report, the guy doesn't have
a ticket issued. <slurs> "I didnt hits him" <takes another swig>
His insurance doesn't want to pay because he said he didn't do it,
your insurance figures it is cheaper to pay it themselves than
chase everybody to court.

Dude that hit me I'm pretty sure he was out drinking all night
and popping xanax or something. Could barely keep his eyes open.
Police didn't even give him a failure to stop ticket.
I end up getting 1/2 out of his insurance company.

I'm just really tired of it.

My MINI got whacked a year ago. It's fixed and better than new. Click my web site link for photos.
On another note, I have a rear bumper cover for sale...

Sorry, man. This sucks. It's a minor hit, I don't think your resale value will plummet. channel your anger through making sure he is prosecuted for felony hit and run. The man is a menace.

You and some friends go back to his apartment and snip his valve stems on all 4 tires. Then when he gets it fixed, do it again. This is more inconvenient (very inconvenient) than it is damaging. Not that you are going to do it, but it's nice to dream.

Nothing is going to happen to him. The cops have bigger fish to fry than to worry about some idiot. It'll be handled with your insurance.

This guy has figured out a little system with his DD. He's either done it before or had this exit plan in place. That's really bad because statistics say he's going to continue until he gets busted or kills someone.

Don't take the above advice unless you want to get arrested (no matter how much you may want to take the advice!!). Some of life's lessons cost more than others. Be thankful that you were not injured and hope that the police may do something.

Or perhaps rather than resort to repeated acts of vandalism, he could just get his car fixed and get on with his life.

I don't know about you, but this is why I pay my insurance company - to handle annoyances like this. The repairs are either going to be covered by the jerk's insurance, or the OP's insurance will cover all/part of it under his uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. In any case, the OP's not going to be out-of-pocket for anything, and his insurance rates won't go up.

If the cops elect not to pursue charges, it's an injustice, but it's not the OP's responsibility to right that wrong, especially by illegal means.

His neighbors said that the car is the womans he's visiting. It had a baby seat in it and everything, she's in for a surprise today.

I concur on the vigilante justice. That's only going to come back on you.

I guess one thing you could do (just thought it up have not
thought it through) you make his driving your new hobby.
You know where he lives. Follow him to the bar and wait,
then call 911 when he gets on the road. This will take quite a bit
of time and energy out of your life. But most places now
3 DWIs is a felony, with jail time, and loss of DL for life.
(I just said most places to sound good, at least in NC it is)

Big hole in this theory is they will just drive without a license. Happens all the time. Can't tell you how many news stories I have read about people who have multiple DUI's but keep driving even though they have no insurance, no license and expired registration. No stopping some of these aholes.

sorry to hear about the accident..

this happened to me about 3-4 years ago when I had my bmw.

I got rear-ended by a Ford Ranger and since it was a pick-up, he missed my bumper and hit the trunk; cost to repair? 8000 dollars.

It seems like your bumper took the beating, don't worry about it, you got yourself a new bumper

Man... really sorry to hear about this. I sure hope that the guy gets what is coming to him, without causing injury to anybody else that is.

Like somebody else mentioned, looks like he has done this before.

Good luck on getting everything worked out!
