Fog Lights Mounted on Roof Rack?
If you mount fog lights on your roof rack they will be absolutely useless as fog lights. All they will do is light up the fog you are trying to see through. Fog lights need to be mounted low to be effective.
Now a set of driving lights up there might be OK, provided you only use them with no oncoming traffic. Even driving lights would work best when mounted about grill height.

if you put covers on them i think they'd be ok. off-roaders have light bars and they're technically not street legal so they're covered most of the time. even some of the high powered hellas (which people mount on alta lightbars) are not technically street legal
bummer-the mini is 55" tall, too tall for fog or driving lights up there. but technically, there are no height limits for spot lights-as long as they aren't aimed at others windshields.
here's the official law (in florida anyway):
AUXILIARY DRIVING LAMPS.--Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two auxiliary driving lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than 16 inches nor more than 42 inches above the level surface upon which the vehicle stands
for reference:
316.233 Spot lamps and auxiliary lamps.--
(1) SPOT LAMPS.--Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two spot lamps and every lighted spot lamp shall be so aimed and used that no part of the high intensity portion of the beam will strike the windshield, or any windows, mirror, or occupant of another vehicle in use.
(2) FOG LAMPS.--Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two fog lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than 12 inches nor more than 30 inches above the level surface upon which the vehicle stands and so aimed that when the vehicle is not loaded none of the high intensity portion of the light to the left of the center of the vehicle shall at a distance of 25 feet ahead project higher than a level of 4 inches below the level of the center of the lamp from which it comes. Lighted fog lamps meeting the above requirements may be used with lower headlamp beams as specified in s. 316.237(1)(b).
(3) AUXILIARY PASSING LAMPS.--Any motor vehicle may be equipped with not to exceed two auxiliary passing lamps mounted on the front at a height not less than 24 inches nor more than 42 inches above the level surface upon which the vehicle stands. The provisions of s. 316.237 shall apply to any combination of headlamps and auxiliary passing lamps.

kinda sucks that we can't have those 4 light bars mounted across the front in florida (technically legally anyway), without 2 being different from the other 2.

that is the one of the best looking minis I've seen.
mine does o.k. in dirt, sand, and some mud, but that looks like it could really handle some trails. the cow catcher bumper guard makes it.

OK, so I get some hella 1900's, big ol' 6" chrome housed for the roof rack, think I can find mounts from ace hardware to mount it to mont blanc roof rack. found some thule roof rack farming light mounts, but I think I can make something better.
wife suggested I hook these lights onto the hazard lights instead of a separate switch. I can't quite find the post about doing exactly that though.
any suggestions for hooking into the rear hazard lights?

If you tap off the hazard switch, make sure to use a relay. Make sure you get a constant power source. Most hazards pulse the power feed. You don't want them to blink.
What color is your roof? Are the chrome lights going to match the theme of the car or would black ones match better. Always gotta think about the theme with a Mini.

think this is the link I was looking for:
https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...t=hazard+light
I'm actually ok with them flashing.
I am turning the mini into an ice cream concession vehicle and like the idea of crazy blinking roof driving lights.
illegal? don't know, I've seen other ice cream trucks with stobe roof lights, which are supposed to be illegal as well.
the bulbs in the hellas are only 100 watt driving lights instead of higher wattage spot lights
black roof, but have been chroming it out as well recently with mirror caps and some chrome silver pin stripping.
the link above mentions 2 relays tied to each turn signal. Think I'll try that with a fuse between them. better yet, would be to add a switch between them as well, so I could use the hazard lights as regular hazard lights without roof lights flashing.
I have the fuse holder, switch, lights, brackets, extra wires, relays, just need to wire stuff next.

mounted to the roof rails with Stainless steel u-bolts. unfortunately, had to go to 6 hardware stores and only found 3 ubolts of the perfect size, temporarily using some door hardware until I can get the last ubolt. once I get that, I will hook up the wires.
As a very vain person, I love the ability to see myself driving while looking up through sunroof at chromed backed lights. also great to see the ice cream cone, to make sure it stays on.

What model rack do you have from thule, and was it hard to install? I've been looking at getting one for my 2008 just like that one, rather than the usual rail. I like the basket style that you have better.
its a mont blanc roof rack with a thule fairing. there are lots of thread in here about the MB's, and they are compatible with about all of the thule accessories, they are also cheaper than the thule.
MB lowest price i could find: think it was either mossmini or performancebicycle.com
fairing link:

pretty easy to install, just put a few peices of vinyl down under the pads so you don't hurt your paint. follow your own judgement about placement, i moved mine forward a few inches of that recomended so that it doesn't intrude on my veiw of the sky with the sunroof open. i also replaced the large plastic attachment brackets with a couple small stainless steel wingnuts so it wouldn't interfere with the sunroof wind deflector. its nice and quiet that way. haven't removed it in months.

Love this. IMO, looks 100000% better than all of the people who rice-out their minis by blacking out and carbon fibering everything.. this is at least original for this kind of car.

The AT tires can't ride any worst than the run flats.
