Smog Check - San Francisco

My 2002 MCS is due its first smog check.

I've called around and found pricing all over the map.

Anyone had a vehicle smog checked in the City recently? Where did you take it and what did it cost?

Thanks is advance for sharing your experience.

I don't know about up in your area, but down here in So Cal, the rate for the Smog Test is based on the zip code.. We live in Oceanside and it's HIGHER than other towns a few miles south...$65...... There are tons of places advertised around here - I'm sure if you did a search on the web, you'll find a bunch up there too.

As I said in my original post, I've done some checking ... the price varies even in the same zip code. I even called MINI of SF who quoted $140 plus $8.25 for the certificate

AAA does it for $57.75 ($64.25 non-members) + $8.25 certificate, at their Civic Center building.

WOW.
Welcome to the Republik of Kalifornia......

It's state wide here, $30. That includes the sticker.

BTW, the smog check they just hook a computer to
the OBD port, if there are no codes, you pass.
They don't actually sniff the tailpipe anymore (except in
CA ha ha, for pre-96 vehicles)

If I'm wrong on this let me know. It would not surprise me if
CA is doing OBD certification as well as tailpipe sniffing.

But that's what this OBD thing is about. The end of tailpipe sniffing.

you are wrong in soo many ways...

OBD says NOTHING about the gas content of your exhaust, except for failure of your cats or 02 sensors.

Tail pipe sniffing is based on air quality, varies by county and state, so you have to look at local requirements to know what's up.

In CA, depending on location, you get a simple niff at idle and 2500 RPM, or a load tested sniff at idle and loaded 2500 (not a very large load, but more than just revving the car). Pretty much all smog tests, even out of our state, require that there not only be no dash light, but that the internal "run tests" be passed. These look at several things, but it mainly prevents you from just clearing your codes before you go into the test station. Some are set when you run 3 or so full "run cycles" where the car goes from cold to operating temp.

Matt

I always laugh when people come up with this "Republik of Kalifonia" crap. Remember, Reagan was our governer. We hatched tricky **** nixon as well. We also feed more money that gets given to other states than any other state in the union. What do we get for it? A bunch of crap! Why not send the $ back too? We sure could use them!

Edit: This freakin' site blanked out the word "Dickk", (extra k added so you can read it) which is a lot of peoples NAME!!!!!!! The purity police need to be spanked!

HA HA

Well, that's the theory of the OBD anyway.

Many states use that as the compliance tool.

CA is different in many regards, on many things.

Where do you think the initial research for alternative fuel vehicles originates?

Besides, if you have en electric vehicle, it won't go to a smog station, nor will a state inspector ever seen one. Come to think of it, I've never seen a CA State Inspector.

Matt, do we have those here?

That's interesting about the OBD port testing.

Not all of CA have the same smog tests, it depends on the county/city you live in. Some counties like Calaveras doesn't have any smog checking. High pollution areas use rolling dynos for testing and the rest just use a sniffer with checks at idle and 2500 rpm.

If you fail a bunch of tests

or are busted for bad parts, you can get reffered to "secondary inspection" that are state employed personnel. I've never been, but gather it's not fun.

I was making a joke on the inspector.

Yes, there are inspectors in CA. I'm not sure if they are human.

My other online club is the 1st generation CRX club.

They've had some real horror stories and not ricer-kids either.
