I would hope that they would stick with what works. A crazy different re-design would be a mistake in my opinion. We already have MANY cars out there that look all the same. Different is good.
Couldn't have been better stated
Looking at a lot of cars that are coming out now and in the near future.
There seems to be a trend of messing with a good thing.
Due to trying to make cars look more futuristic.

I agree with those who want very S L O W evolution, like with Porsche. One of the biggest blunder Saturn made with their 1st generation cars was to evolve them too fast, directly from sharp, sporty-looking cars to mere generic-looking car.

Rob Golding, in his book "MINI 50 Years," talks about the pattern MINI follows and calls out the Porsche as its model for this very reason. (He contrasts that to what Volkswagen did with the New Beetle.)
Normally, I wouldn't think BMW would find a large-enough audience for a new MINI the size of a classic Mini, but I'm sure they're watching to see how well the Smart takes off here.
Maybe someone could take a 1st gen aero kit and someone get it to fit on a classic, making it look like that drawing. With what custom builders do today, it would be easy. Any takers?

I really wouldn't consider the 1st and 2nd gen a major design change.
Being a first time mini owner I honestly didn't see the difference until someone pointed out the subtle change in the hood, etc.
I'm talking a major body change. The mustang did a major body change. Maxima done a major body change. Jeep made a major body change with their wranglers including a 4 door version. Changes that really test the emotions of loyal followers of the product.
The Clubman is a true major change for mini products and actually it is not a change but an addition to the mini product line.

I'm really not sure why you quoted my post in your reply. I never said anything about the differences between the 1st-gen/2nd-gen MINI. All I was saying is that I think BMW will be watching to see how the Smart car does in the U.S. before they would seriously consider coming out with a new MINI that's as small as a classic Mini. Personally, I'd love to see it happen as an *additional* model, not as a replacement for the current-sized MINI.
