2007 Formula 1 Discussion Thread
So . . . your point about blown engines in practice?
Looking specifically at the events where Raikkonen went head to head with JPM (with the exception of the two 05 events with JPM's tennis injury) . . .
I'm not certain the facts support your claims.
Of course, I'm not counting practice. Only Quali and Race . . . what you might call "endzone" facts.

You made the comment about Kimi's laps vs JPM's laps.
NOT counting practice or quals? LOL. Why do you think Kimi was getting shunted to the back or middle of the grid? Blowing an engine in practice or quals!

If you look at the results . . . and please direct your attention to Suzuka '05 and Bahrain '06 . . . Kimi never really suffered from whatever happened in practice.
Of course, you seem to rationalize use of practice occurences to suit your pov, while casually discounting noteworthy facts such as overall laps driven. One on hand you say practice counts, on another you say not.
Are you suggesting that we count blown engines in practice but not laps?
Anyway, my point is that the facts do not support your generalized contention that Kimi suffered more failures than JPM due to being hard on the car.
If you look at the results . . . especially the Grid positions . . . you can see where Kimi was beset by problems in Qualifying.
I am going to go with some bold statements, then put on my flame resistant suit:
Numero uno: Michael does kick *** - always did and still could if he wanted to. Take a look at the newest issue of F1 - interesting math done to determine the "fastest" driver in '06, and Michael was far and away faster.
Number 2: Kimi will kick *** at Ferrari.

Woohoo.............just read this!!

LONDON (Reuters) - American teenager Marco Andretti, grandson of former Formula One champion Mario, will have a second test with Honda next week, the team said on Friday.
The 19-year-old, runner-up in last year's Indy 500 race, had his first taste of Formula One at Jerez in southern Spain in December.
Honda said Andretti would drive last year's RA106 car in Jerez on February 7 and 8.
"We were impressed with Marco during his first test with our team and he performed well in the short time he had in the car," said sporting director Gil de Ferran in a statement.
"Given the potential that he has demonstrated and the availability of last year's RA106, we saw Jerez as a great opportunity to put him back in the car," added the Brazilian.
Andretti, son of former CART champion Michael, said he was looking forward to his second chance.
"I felt that I did a good job in December but on the first day you spend more time getting used to the car and familiarising yourself with the circuit," he said. "When I get in the car this time I am sure I will be able to hit the ground running."

"Abu Dhabi to host F1 Grand Prix
Ecclestone says the Abu Dhabi contract could be extended Abu Dhabi will host a Formula One Grand Prix from 2009 in a calendar that could be extended to 20 races.
Bernie Ecclestone's Formula One management company has signed a seven-year deal for a race in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.
The 5.6km circuit on Yas Island will include street and marina sections.
"We are very committed to Abu Dhabi. We have a seven-year contract, but I'm sure the race will go on forever," said Ecclestone.
He added that the race would not be a threat to nearby Bahrain, which has hosted a race since 2004 and recently agreed a long-term deal.
"I am sure that Bahrain and Abu Dhabi will work closely together to make sure Formula One is very successful in this part of the world, which is very important," said Ecclestone
"At the moment we have got five countries waiting to see if we can put a race there.
"We are aiming for 20 races. I think we are now well served in this part of the world."
Ecclestone also confirmed that he wants to add night races to the championship calendar with Singapore among the leading candidates."
Now, does anyone else think it's monumentally stupid to make anykind of long range plans for a race in the middle east?

I'd kind of like to see a race in Gaza, maybe dodging bullets is what is needed to get more passing back into F1.
I realize a lot of folks don't care for Imola, but I went to the race in '04 and fell in love with the place. With its elevation changes and surrounding landscape . . . it is no doubt a very intimate spectator venue.
I want to go back there again. Hopefully the improvements they are making will dissuade Ecclestone from permanently dropping the San Marino race.
I can't bear to see F1 become a series of barren Tilke Stadiums. Some of his tracks are good, . . . Turkey . . . most of them are flat . . . wide enough for Neckcar . . . and lack any connection to the locale they are situated in.

Oh please, I can't stand one more year of not having Spa on the schedule. That has and forever will be my favorite F1 track. So gorgeous, so huge. And there has been so much action there in the past. Thank you Mr. Coulthard
Thanks for posting the website for the Abu Dhabi GP. Man, that will be hard to say when I am drunk. The circuit looks very interesting. Won't be that far for Shumi to get there from his place over in Dubai, in "The World". Will this be another GP where the podium finishers will be celebrating with Rose Water?

Agreed, the best track still in F1. No other modern track can compare with the real elevation changes of the ardennes region of Belgium. Bernie is just chasing more Euros for his insatiable greed. Pity the world's F1 fans must suffer while tobacco adverts, petty dictatorships, and the megalomaniacs of FIA all get the ear of F1's supremo. Regardless, F1 on mickey mouse tracks is still F1, and that beats just about all other forms of motorsport (dirt track 1/4 midgets excepted).
Nawwww I don't think it's cut or will be in the immediate future. I was just replying to Gromit's post about favoring new tracks and lucrative new markets instead of the old ones. Or, at leaast that's what I inferred from his post about the Abu Dhabi GP.
I must admit I'm getting a little worn from signing onto my favorite F1 sites every morning and reading another "pundit" proclaim that Alonso has "delivered" reliability from the heavens to a car which has demonstrated very little over the past few years . . . while also discounting Raikkonen's potential at Ferrari.
I like Fred. However, he's a bit outspoken for my tastes. Don't care too much for the road rage, either. No matter how minor.
I think that is one reason that I admire Kimi. He's all GO . . . and very little show
