2007 Formula 1 Discussion Thread
I think they should adopt the scoring used my MotoGP. It would solve both their problems of the winner not getting a big differential of points, and not alot of people scoring points.
1st - 25 pts.
2 - 20
3 - 16
4 - 13
5 - 11
6 - 10
7 - 9
...
15 - 1

Really?
Do you know:
1) which entities led the change from the 9-6-4 point system to 10-6-4?
2) which entities later brought us the revised 10-8-6 system that is used now?
3) Where Ecclestone stood on these changes. What was his role?
Enlighten me.

Personally . . . too many points . . . too many points paying positions. But it almost seems too logical that all FIA governed motorsport should score consistently
Well all, the green will be dropping in Melbourne, for practice, in about 10 hours. YAY, WOO HOO.
A couple of days ago I asked a buddy if he will be watching the live timing feed from formula1.com, while he is watching practice/qual/race. He had no idea what I was talking about. So, I would like to make sure of all you NAM F1 folks have this info too.
Over @ Formula1.com, they have a live timing screen that mimics the timing screen the teams get during each session. You get split times, intervals, actual time lost in the pits, an absolute ton of information. You will have to register for the site, so please go there before 4pm PST today, so you don't miss a second of race action.
Formula 1 Live Timing
Here is a picture that hows a bit of what I am talking about:

Let's all chat in here after the 1st session, BS about what happened and didn't happen. Wonder if the Super Happy Friends cars will make it around the circut without exploding.
-Jason
EDIT: And as a note, I have seen that the f1.com live timing is usually a few seconds (maybe even 15), AHEAD of the SpeedTV broadcast. So, by watching the live timing, you might be getting some info before you see it on the TV. So please take this as a possible spoiler warning

YEAH ............. KIMI !!
Too bad for Massa though, a rare mechanical or electrical let-down. I hope Satos' time will stand as well as Hamilton's since Williams may protest. And it definitely looks as if Mclaren is back big time....
What a day Saturday will be!! ALMS all day long and then F1.....

The real test for McLaren comes in getting its cars to the checkered flag. They have qualified well at times during the past 2 years, but struggled to finish consistently.
I noticed quite a few changes in the cars this year (besides just the terrible paint jobs at Renault and Honda):
Noses seem to be drooping down toward the track more - see Red Bull, for instance.
Front wings are looking like mobius strips - see Ferrari, for example
Outside edges of the side pods/exhausts are getting higher and longer - see McLaren
Should be a very interesting race tonight.

I though the "we are the world" paint scheme was neat.

Mclaren looks good but I don't think they have anything for Ferrari.........
Great job by Hamilton, dumb move by Coulthard, too bad for Speed, and nice job by Massa......
And congrats to Kimi!!
Ferrari will win Drivers & Constructors championships.........

Bridgestone say they fitted more than 1800 tires over the race weekend alone!!!!

And here's a summary of the race tire choices.

Coulthard is lucky he didn't kill Wurz. I think he must have watch Montoya's Busch race in Mexico (or maybe the end of Sebring GT2 last night) and forgot that you can't push people out of the way in F1.
The lamest part of the race was hearing that Bernie chose not to let Bridgestone distinctly mark the soft tires because it would make it appear as though F1 were copying Champ Car (where the soft-compound Bridgestones have red sidewalls).
Well, his plan worked because. It doesn't look like F1 is copying Champ Car - it looks like they're idiots for not copying Champ Car. Let us see what tires everyone is on!

At least he immediately admitted it was his fault rather than blaming Wurz...or his tires...or dirt on the track...or just try to pass it off as a "racing incident."
The Wurz cockpit-cam view of the incident was certainly entertaining. If you recorded the race, be sure to check it out. I'm one of those guys who normally cringe a bit when there's an accident rather than cheer, but that short slo-mo clip is worth a replay or two.

Wurz's incident makes one appreciate the way in which the drivers are more deeply seated into the cars these days. Had such an accident happened in the 70's . . . he might very well be in the hospital.
Reminded me of Derek Daly crashing down upon the bow of his Tyrell teammate JP Jarier at Monaco years ago.

Watching Peter Windsor on the grid during the pre-race show was a blast...he got so revved up he lost his cameraman!!!
Very cool seeing Jackie Stewart down there and cool bit w/ Sterling Moss...reminds one that, yes, this is F1!!!
I may actually get to watch all (or most) of the races this year...I don't recognize any of the car liveries any more!!! More familiar with the Schumacher years, it is fun to see a great group of young, smart, and professional drivers.
Congrats to the winners...great job Hamilton for keeping your wits about you, in the pits and on the curbs!!
DC.....oops!!!
