AutoX (or Autocross or Solo II) - Big parking lots, lots of orange cones, one car at a time, fastest time in each class wins. All you need is a helmet to get started.
Solo I (or time trials) - On race tracks, but one car at a time. Safety equipment may be required in addition to a helmet.
Hill Climbs - On paved, closed, semi-public roads, up mountains, one car at a time. Safety equipment may be required.
Road racing (both amateur and professional) - On race tracks, lots of cars at a time all trying to be first. Specialized safety euipment required (roll cages, harnesses, etc).
Performance Rally (or Club Rally, Pro Rally) - Closed roads through the woods, deserts, moutains, frozen lakes, whatever. Specialized safety euipment required.
TSD (or Touring) Rally - Open public roads, at or below posted speed limits, goal is to stay on course, on time, all the time following a very specific set of route instructions.
In addition, many clubs offer high performance driver education events if you're looking to take your MINI (or Honda as the case may be) on the track.
If you want to particiate, check out the SCCA (Solo I and II, rally, and racing) at http://www.scca.org for more info and to find a chapter near you, or check out http://www.nasaproracing.com/aboutnasa/newtonasa.html for NASA racing and drivers school info. The BMW CCA - http://www.bmwcca.org - offers drivers schools and autocross series all over the country (as do all of the other marque clubs). There are lots of regional clubs as well (COM SCC, EMRA, and SCDA here in the Northeast to name a few) that offer different types of events depending on where you are and what you're interested in doing.
For race spectating, MINIs are showing up in Grand Am pro racing (http://www.grand-am.com/) as well as in SCCA Club Racing Showroom Stock categories. If there's an SCCA Autocross near you, check out the Coopers tearing it up in H-Stock class (and others as well).

btw, I used to race a Honda (and just sold it Jan 1), nothing wrong with them..

I concur on both points.
My current daily driver is a 92 Civic Si with 174,000 miles on it.

motorcycle racing
horse racing
boat racing
snowmobile racing
car racing (although autox is one of them as is NASCAR, F1...)
bicycle racing
Marathon racing
Dog Racing
I know there is more, but I think I covered most of them. Can anyone else think of some more.

Dang, you all missed the kickass R/C car racing!!! Nothing like the thrill of 1/10 and 1/8th scale on-road/touring nitro cars!! And pro-buggy nitros are way cool too! :smile:

The SCCA autoX courses are set up so that you WILL NOT hit anything; light poles, curbs, etc. The worst damage I've seen is a person who destroyed their front spoiler from mauling a cone. I've heard of people flipping their cars but it doesn't sound right to me. There is a video of a Corvette driving through a crowd of people but that was a Corvette Club event not SCCA. My SCCA Safety Steward is very 'on it' and our courses are very safe. But, to answer your question, no I don't think insurance would cover the damage. It all depends on the company and your relationship with the company. Driving 40+ MPH like a madman through a parkinglot is not advisable by an insurance company.
There is a local bar that has vibrator races so add that to the list. I imagine they would do well on a small scale autoX course as they don't travel in a straight line.

A beginning A-X car can easily be street-legal and would also work well at DE's to learn and get used to track time.
Once you start building a car with modifications for track racing (roll cages, etc), it starts becoming less than practical for street use.

I saw a Camaro SS aquire carnal knowledge of the cement base of a light pole at an SCCA event but I don't want to scare anyone. The SCCA events are safer than the street. Listen to the safety steward in the driver briefing and follow the rules. It's a controlled environment in which to explore the limits of your skills and the capability of your car.

I have road raced all my adult life. I got the Mini and went Autocrossing twice last fall. I am in love with both the car and the form of sport! I won't give up road racing but I will sure do some autoX.
