Well I'm on the fence. I want it now but the 2014 new platform should be a big improvement.

I'd bet the JCW won't be out for about a year after the new F56 is launched...

I was on the fence too, until I read some previews about the F56... slighly bigger, no big, center mount speedo... and saw a spy shot of the interior dash....

look at my signature and you'll see what side of the fence I landed on.

And personally, I would never buy the first model year of a new platform.

I also bought an R56 before they're no longer available (though not the JCW, that was last year). I'm suspicious of the F56 and I know I like the R56. I would also be entirely unsurprised if there were no JCW for a year or two.

FWIW I've spoken to 3 dealers in my area and all of them have assured me I will be able to order a 2014 JCW Hardtop in the fall. I've been told may be November or December. I feel they will be available as BMW didn't halt M production when the F10 was introduced for 2011.

If you get a 2014 JCW it doesnt mean you will get the N20 though, they still might run the current N18 for a couple of years. We saw that with the N14 in the JCW for 2 years after the MCS got the N18, then it came to the JCW.

At this stage, don't you either have to buy from inventory or order a 2014? I didn't think they were taking 2013 orders anymore.

Plus the selection will get slim. My dealer told me they can be without almost any cars for almost 2 months come Dec-Feb depending on how things go.

As of last Saturday my dealer could still order a R56 JCW. The MA said the window was very tight if I wanted to order one. I'm holding for F56 JCW.

And maybe you don't want the first year of an all new car. I've made that mistake a couple of times.

Yes, the 2014 will be an "improvement" on the 2013. But the 2015 will be an "improvement" on the 2014, and so on and so forth. Whatever you choose to go for, do so secure in the knowledge that next year's will be "better" than this year's . Are you going to put your entire life on hold, waiting for the next, best one? Get the one that makes you happy, and enjoy it.

Also, I second what others have already said - You don't want the first year of a new model, and the F56 is reportedly going to be a bigger change from the R56 than the R56 was from the R50.

Good luck, and happy motoring!

Not sure that is quite true. All things being equal, yes, each year should be better than the last as they find issues and resolve them, but the 2014 for the Hardtop is going to be very VERY new. 3rd Generation I guess it will be called around here.

So it may introduce its own set of issues. Personally, I try to shy away from first year redesigns or launches.

I would thing any JCW with the N14 would be best - for tuning purposes.

If ease of tuning is more important to you than say.... not having carbon build up.

+ 1
The N14 engine in my 2008 MCS had major carbon buildup at under 15k miles.

Has the N18 engine been proven to not have carbon build up?

Apparently, yes. Some changes were to attempt to eliminate the problem or at least reduce it drastically. And I've read some threads around here that indicate the N18 owners are not having the issue.

FWIW, I just called MINIUSA and I was told all models EXCEPT the hardtop are switching over now to produce 2014 models. 2013 HTs will continue to be produced til the end of the year.
